Siam House Thai Restaurant
This is one of York's few Thai restaurants and is conveniently located in the centre of the city, allowing easy access to most of the pubs and clubs. The exterior is deceptive and suggests a much smaller restaurant. The main dining area is upstairs and offers plenty of tables, which makes it a good choice for group gatherings. The menu is very large, with over 40 main dishes to choose from and quite a number of desserts and salads. But seafood is their speciality and they particularly cater for vegetarians. A sample from the menu: king prawns with garlic and pepper will cost a little under £9 and a superb duck curry will be about £8. Smell the wonderfully aromatic flavours of the East and taste the delightful seasonings and spices; its all part of the Thai experience.
I am writing this while sat at home feeling incredibly nauseous, following my meal at Siam House. I had the misfortune of sampling their vegetarian starter selection and fried aubergine main - both consisting of deep-fried and indistinguishable greasy lumps. A floury deep-fried mass of broccoli is by no means interesting nor even edible. Whilst I sat dreading my main meal, I somehow managed to convince myself that perhaps the starter was an anomaly. Sadly this was not the case, and I was presented with another repulsive and inedible plate of food. I would never visit this restaurant again, and urge others to consider other options. This sort of food is perhaps best sold in a polystyrene box to drunks. Truly awful.
Very good food, excellent service. Always very full which must say something, Staff are originally from Thailand and informative on the culture. The first Thai restaurant in York unless I'm mistaken, the experience was lovely and we will be returning. Not very expensive either, I think 31.50 for a meal for two.
