King's Ransom (The)
This is a genuine Indian restaurant on the edge of the River Ouse and in the centre of York. It is in close proximity to many of the larger pubs and clubs, particularly The Gallery, which is just a short walk away, and this makes it a perfect way to begin, or round off, a night out. The interior is rather elegant and the atmosphere is friendly and very lively. The menu is pretty large and covers most of the popular Indian dishes. A Beef Rogan Josh is just under £6 and a Lamb Jalfrezi is about £7. They also specialise in Balti dishes, which cost around £10.
We have recently been to this restaurant(June2007).On arrival we were squashed next to another couple even though the place was nearly empty. We moved our table and the waiter was obviously not happy about this. His manner throughout the entire meal was disgraceful.I ordered the Bhuna fish meal. This was the smallest flat fish they must have had in the restaurant .It was full of bones with hardly any fish on it at all.On ordering the meal he did not seem to know what went with it so we ordered 2 portions of rice and some chips. As it came with a salad the rice was a total waste of money so went back untouched yet was still charged for.I found the meal and service extremely poor and overpriced.I would not advise anyone to go there.
I LIKED THE FOOD BEST AND WOULD PREFER THE REASTAURANT AS NON SMOKING.WOULD RECOMEND FOR SMALL PARTY OR GATHERINGS,ROMANTIC DINER OR FAMILY MEAL.VERY GOOD VALUE FOR STUDENTS.NICE DECOR,GOOD SERVICE,BEST FOOD,TRULY THE BEST RESTAURANT IN YORK.
We have visited york several times over the past few years.Eating out is an intregal part of the experience. If you wish to experience excellent indian cuisine in pleasant friendly surroundings and at a reasonable price then the Kings Ransom is for you. With an interesting array of dishes from the different regions of india, there is plenty of choice for the palate of novice or expert. The dishes are cooked to order with the freshiest ingredients and are well worth the wait.Friendly staff add to the pleasure of the experience and of course the kingfisher Lager is a worthy accompaniment to the fantastic indian food.
