With a host of international awards to its name, this is one of the finest zoos in Europe and home to some 5000 animals. It is well worth making the 50 minute journey from Manchester to visit and motorway and public transport links are good. Plan your visit in advance as getting round the acres of enclosures and landscaped gardens takes some doing. Nearly half the species on view are endangered and the zoo is heavily involved in scientific, conservation, educational and animal welfare projects. Popular attractions include the elephants, lions, tigers, children's farm, penguins, chimpanzees and the largest free-flight bat cave in the world.
i'm a luchtime assistant at a primary school the class i look after was given free tickets for the zoo (lucky for us) it poured with rain for the whole day but we enjoyed ourselves with plenty of things to see and do good clean toilet facilities and undercover picnic areas
the children loved the bat house being able to see the animals in their natural surroundings added to their excitement since my last visit over 20 years ago the layout and improvements made have been exellent
i would recommend a visit and would certainly pay the admission charge next time a really good value day out
