Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King Liverpool
This unusual and distinctive building can be found a little outside the city center. One of two stunning cathedrals in the city, the Catholic Cathedral is the result of Sir Frederick Gibberd's award-winning contemporary design of the 1960's. The structure is circular and almost rocket-like in appearance. During the day, the interior mesmerizes with a vivid display of light radiating through the magnificent colored glass panels. An impressive, suspended metal installation symbolizing the Crown of Thorns hangs above the high altar. An on-site bookshop and informative guides are available. Admission is free.
