Revisit an Important Land[mark and Life’s Waypoint
Urban Revitalization – Bah Humbug!
One of my daughters seeking the Park Wedding Chapel in Reno as a desired place for her fiancée and she to repeat a little family history, discovered that the rich jewel of Reno history has given way for a parking lot or its ilk! I guess that is progress in someone’s view.
With a heavy heart I reflect upon our elopement back in September 29, 1962. Jan’s mother, unknowingly allowed her totally lovely daughter to use a newer car to run off with me, a Marine from then NAS Alameda (adjacent to Oakland, CA) to elope and begin our life together. As we are a week out from our 48th anniversary, I/we have planned to revisit this important land mark and life’s “waypoint” to historically recognize one of the key navigation points in our life Journey (i.e. including 7 children and a dozen grand children.)
I was in my dress blues and Jan wore a smart beige suit that she had sewn. I recall that the minister was holding his prayer book/officiate manual, with the book open to his marriage service text, where his thumb rested upon the open page to the right of his text, his thumb had naturally worn a hole through the 4-5 pages following the marriage service section. I wonder how many thousands of couples like us that he had personally launched along life’s path with companions and help meets that would ultimately share all of life’s deep joys and profound sorrows?
I suspect that “Urban Revitalization,” in what ever words that one uses to express that idea, is in fact a blight upon the rich culture that it is foisted upon…
