Lion Habitat at The MGM Grand Hotel & Casino
This is a wonderful spot at the MGM Grand to spend an hour or two gazing at the lions and cubs in their multi-level, state-of-the-art showcase and natural habitat. These pampered cats are housed off-site and rotated every few hours, so you get to see a variety of the 30 or so MGM lions. There's also a gift shop, with lots of fun toys, stuffed animals and clothing. A portion of the proceeds goes to organizations dedicated to the preservation of lions.
When we walked by on 3/5...the two lions were getting it on!!! Besides that, it's was fun watching them play ball and "test" the water, etc.
A great 10-15 minute stare at the lions and it's a FREE to do thing in Vegas!
We had some trouble finding it since it was in the middle of a huge casino but it was absolutely breathtaking once we found it. I loved how the lions played with this ball just like a cat would. we were also lucky enough to come back and the lions were sleeping over the walkway and we walked under them. I loved the very well priced lion gift shop and the free habitat was a great side thing to do after lunch at the Rain forest cafe near by. WE WILL BE BACK!
It is 2 lions that sleep all day, (they are nocturnal), and occasional trainers that go in and try to make them play. The good thing is that the lions are not kept in there all the time, they are actually brought in from a ranch nearby, not that I think lions should be in a glass cage in a Las Vegas casino......
We are due to visit Vegas in May of this year and even looked at the possibility of staying at the MGM Grand but after reading about this so called 'Lion Habitat' no way.!! How anybody can justify this is unbelievable.. the 'king of the jungle' the beautiful, majestic big cat that is the lion caged behind reinforced glass in a hotel casino is nothing but disgraceful.! Regardless of the fact that they claim the lions are rotated these cats belong in their natural environment they are not entertainment props for this hotel to cash in on and the keepers who allow the cubs to be handled by the general public should know far better than to allow this happen. Next time you visit this so called 'attraction' ask yourself this; if you were that pacing lion, caged for all to stare at with the constant flashes of tourists cameras. Powerless to protect your tiny cub from being taken from you only to be prodded and 'played with' by humans would you be anywhere near happy..??
I have a lot of really great photos of the lions at play with the trainers. This was a very unique experience and I made several visits during my stay. They had someone talking about the lions and explaining about the program and training. I really enjoyed it a lot.
It feels so different when you can see lions through 1" glasses. Their paws look so big, and their roars sound so clear. From my point of view, it's more attractive than the secret garden, and best of all, it's free.
I was expecting a little bit more. There was a tunnel you walked into to watch a movie about the lions- I've got Animal Planet on cable for that. It is a free exhibit but would have liked to see a staff member there for q&a's.
I think the best time to visit is meal time since these animals sleep most of the time.
