Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, located just a few miles west of Las Vegas, is named for the deep red 3,000-foot-high sandstone cliffs that are perched above the dusty wastelands of this part of the Mojave Desert. The view from any part of the park is breathtaking: mostly nature fills the view, but from some points the entire Las Vegas Strip can be seen in the distance. If the temperature is extremely hot, climbing, hiking, bicycling throughout the park is not recommended; instead, opt to drive around the park (expect to pay a small fee for motorized vehicles) along a 13-mile paved loop. A visitor's center provides information on area history, geology, flora, and fauna (visitors may encounter burros, big horn sheep, or desert tortoises). Visitors can also pick up a map of the park with detailed hiking routes (beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels). Rangers offer guided tours at no charge.
I have lived in Las Vegas, Henderson to be exact, for 14 years now, and for years we have done a mild hike and had our lunch, one year a Turkey dinner from scratch, kept it warm set up our tables, chairs in the warm sun, cool breeze and enjoyed the great outdoors of Red Rock........We loved it, mile hike or moderate, we even enjoyed a opera singer one year who was somewhere up high, he sang beautifully like you were in a theatre, whoever he was, we enjoyed the Red Rock Canyon even more that day
Crikey! Went out there for a convention yah know. Signed in at the desk and split for the Canyon. Stayed there all day with a couple of buttons and a schroom or two! She's a Beaut she is, a real beaut!
I just got back from Las Vegas last week and it was the most awesome vacation I have ever had. We stayed in a guest house at the Red Rock Country Club and it was amazing. The views of the mountains from our house were incredible. On Friday, the day before we left, we went horseback riding through the canyon and I have to say, other than the Grand Canyon, every picture I took was different and amazing, whether it was the mountain, the desert, the cactus, or the others on horseback, it is truly something that I will never, ever forget. I would go back in a heartbeat. This being my first visit to Las Vegas, I had no idea that there was such majesty within 10 minutes of where I stayed, thinking that Las Vegas was only about the Strip, Shows and Gambling. I was so very happy to be proven wrong. Thanks Nevada for a wonderful week.
i`ve lived in las vegas since 1983 and have visted rock rock canyon several times through the years. as far as the beauty of the area it`s the best i`ve seen that is close to the las vegas valley. valley of fire is nice, but i like red rock better.
I had no idea this would affect me the way it did. When driving up to it, you see that you will be making a large loop through some rocks. but get on that loop, turn off your radio and open the windows and you are in a different world. Stunning. I wasn't prepared to get out and walk with sandals on, so I returned that afternoon with my husband and he was equally wow'd. Do get out and take a couple of paths. you will not regret it.
