Johnny Goodman Golf Course
If you love to work on your short game, this course is for you. Long fairways give way to greens that prove challenging to even the best putters. The 18-hole, par 72 stretches 6,928 yards from the championship tees. Greens fees run higher than some public courses, but these grounds are well kept. An on-site putting green and driving range make warm-ups easy. No credit cards are accepted.
I live a block away from Johnny G. and love every summer because of it. Although I have played many country clubs in the area, there is nothing like the relaxing feeling of driving off the 1st tee as if I'm in my backyard. The great condition of fairways and greens, even in the hottest stretches of weather, makes each round a pleasure to walk or ride. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to challenge themselves instead of playing the same old par 3 course again and again. I hope some updates to the clubhouse and overall look of the entrance are something in this years budget. I think that's all the course needs to keep the parking lot full for years to come.
I was recommended to visit JG and did so last Saturday. The entire course was in excellent condition. The numerous doglegs create a lot of shot-making. The elevated greens keep the suspense until you finally see just how good your approach shot was. The greens allow for a different experience each time you play with the multiple tiers and breaks. I loved this course and will be back many times this summer. $22 for a Sat afternoon, are you kidding me?
Johnny Goodman/Applewood is my favorite course in omaha. It combines decent length with challenging putts. The golfer is continually challenged with alternating dogleg right, straight and dogleg left holes. All par 3's are over water with length from 120 yds up to almost 200 yards. The par 5's are all reachable by the bigger hitters, but each will require two good shots to do so. The Golf Course has been run since it's opening in 1971 by Gene Johnson. Gene is by far the most accomodating pro in omaha. He makes every effort to get walk ons on the course. He knows his cliental and when he uses his walk ons to fill out foursomes, he is very adept at matching skill levels. I strongly recommend anyone that wants to walk on for a quick nine, or an afternoon 18 to try applewood. (They should have never renamed the course Johnny Goodman Golf Course, they should have waited until Gene Retired and Renamed it Gene Johnson Golf Course)
