Durham Western Heritage Museum
Take a step back in time with a visit to this totally renovated art deco-style train station. Formerly known as Union Station, the museum boasts over 65,000 square feet of exhibits including the Byron Reed Coin and Document Collection, The Trans-Mississippi Exposition Gallery, restored train cars, a teepee, an earth lodge and more. The Museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Temporary exhibitions are also offered.
I take my sister here every summer. I always love walking through the historic train they have set up and through their mini historic town. They always have great exhibits that can offer hands-on activities.
We also like to go up to the Old Fashioned Soda Fountain upstairs when we're done for a special treat! It's a lot of fun for the whole family!
This place is absolutely amazing and provides fun for the whole family. From cool trains to the latest and best exhibits, I always have the best time at this museum.
They also know how to throw an event like no other place in town. Every time I go to the Durham, I leave truly feeling I am getting my money's worth out of my trip. And the art deco main waiting room is a must see. You just have to see it to believe it. Visit the Durham once, and you'll be hooked.
This museum was exactly what I expected and so much more! Besides the train exhibit that allows you to travel through old passenger cars, and a large model train track, there are many displays from the old west and the beginnings of Omaha.
What really caught me off guard was the large hands on science section. This section was perfect for the elementary school age kid. From soft blocks to build an arch (I saw a family working together to complete this task), to a wind tunnel, to tools used in the building of our country, there was something for everyone.
The Museum is s real treat. You can spend a lot of time wondering through the permanent exhibits that include Nebraska and Midwestern history. My favorite parts were the Byron Reed coin collection and Union Station Gallery.
There are also traveling and temporary exhibits that are equally as interesting. I would save an afternoon and go check out the Durham Western Heritage Museum, its sure to be fun for everyone
On my visit to Durham Western Heritage Museum I am blow away but the quality. The build in itself is absolutely marvelous. The Museum is also amazing with a transportation area focusing on the railroad that used to travel through he building and also some other older transportation artifacts. The other extravagant par of the museum was the Omaha, Nebraska and regional history portion. The staff was very knowledgeable and the exhibit was set up in a manor that was very easy to learn though. There are also traveling and temporary exhibits that change every few months and are extremely interesting. I would recommend everyone to go visit the museum, i know i will be back to visit some of their temporary exhibits in the future
