Henry Doorly Zoo

Description

Readers of Disney-owned Family Fun Magazine recently named this the "#1 Family Friendly Vacation Spot in the U.S." After visiting, you will understand why. Where else can you stroll through the world's largest man-made jungle; view sharks and other deep sea inhabitants through a glass-enclosed, walk-through tunnel; take a Lozier IMAX Theatre adventure to the top of Mt. Everest; and view hundreds of birds flying freely in a mesh aviary the size of four football fields; all in one afternoon?

Un Happy
By ,
It had been 8 years since i had been to Henry doorly zoo. was so excited to go back and this time take my husband with me. he was unable to come last time when i took my kids an grand kids i was so dissapointed this time. it was a big let down. no elephants, very few monkies, the sliver backs looked so unhappy and just laid around. people dont bother them at all. it just was not the zoo it was 8 years ago. i was going to take my granddaughter back since she was only 2 when we went before. but i will not make the drive from Mo. to Neb. for the zoo again. unless i hear its inmproved.

RIP OFF
By ,
We lived in Nebraska for 4 years now and have had a zoo membership for each year. I love this zoo. The exhibits are nice and my kids love it. We always go to see the animals and we never do any of the extra stuff EXCEPT this trip I decided to let the kids go on the merry-go-round that they have there. Its 2 dollars per child to ride and if your child is under 42' you can ride with them. Anyway i paid the 8 dollars for me and the kids to go on the ride. They were so excited, specially my 2 and 4 year old....THE RIDE WENT IN ONE COMPLETE CIRCLE AND STOPPED..."thank you pls wait until it comes to a complete stop and exit to your right." All the parents were lookin at each other in confusion and the little kids started whining. SERIOUSLY!! TWO DOLLARS FOR A 15 SECOND RIDE...We stopped half a foot from when we started!!!

Henry Doorly Zoo
By ,
The Lied Jungle is the best indoor rainforest simply put. It has a huge variety of animals under its 1.5 acre roof. It is filled with foliage and rivers. There are two ways to see it; from a canopy level walk, or from a dirt path on the forest floor. It passes through three geographic sections; Asia, Africa, and South America. As you enter the Asian rainforest you will see a small fairy bluebird exhibit in the rock. On either side of the path is an island for lar and white handed gibbons. Like all the primate islands, they are very large and offer plenty of climbing opportunities for the animals. Sharing the lar gibbons home are Asian small-clawed otters. Living behind glass in the Asian nightlife cave are pygmy slow lorises, blood python, Malayan water monitor, while Indian crested porcupines and clouded leopards both inhabit dark cave-like exhibits. Another island is home to ebony/ francois langurs (rotating) and Malayan tapirs. The first exhibit you will see in Africa is a small DeBrazza’s monkey exhibit (formerly home to ring-tailed lemurs). Blue monkeys live on an island, while lake Victoria cichlids and Nile soft-shelled tortoises live in the water surrounding the island. A Dumeril’s ground boa lives in a tiny glass fronted exhibit in an overhanging tree branch. African pygmy geese, silvery-cheeked hornbills, violaceous turaco, and green woodhoopoe live in a nice aviary next to a Home’s hinge-backed tortoise exhibit. Pygmy hippos live in a small pool up ahead across from African spot-necked otters. In South America an island is home to black spider monkeys as well as white-fronted capuchins and Baird’s tapir. In another cave you can see yellow anaconda, Brazilian rainbow boa, cotton-top tamarin, common marmoset, golden lion tamarin, Panamanian golden from, and black and white tegu. From this cave, visitors can access an overlook of the spider monkey island. Three islands make up the last exhibit. Scarlet macaws live on one, while red-backed bearded sakis and mustached tamarins live on the largest one. Two-toed sloths live on another island, while arapaima, silver arowana, red-breasted pacu and other fish like in the surrounding waters. Free-flying birds include sunbittern, radjah shelduck, magpie goose, hammerkop, gray-necked wood rail, black crake, nicobar pigeon, white-crested laughing thrush, and straw-necked ibis, among others. When starting on the ground level, the first exhibit is a freshwater stingray pool, followed by an overlook into the Baird’s tapir exhibit. A tunnel offers underwater views of the pygmy hippos. Small aquariums are home to cichlids. Ahead are underwater viewing for Malayan tapirs, Asian small-clawed otters, and Philippine crocodiles. Prevost’s squirrels behind galls are the last animals you will see. The main point of the forest floor seems to be for observing the birds free-flying. Overall, the section has some small exhibits, but is brilliant

Big Hype
By ,
This zoo was over hyped. It was as good as the Kansas City Zoo. Some features were good(Aquarium, Desert Dome, Gorilla Enclosure), but the rest were just typical. Bear and cat enclosures too small. Also it was a little too hilly, it was a real workout pushing a stroller around.

My family and I went two years ago and we are planning to go back this year. I especially loved the Lied Jungle, the aquarium, and too many more things to mention.

I miss this zoo
By ,
I used to live in Nebraska and whenever my mother took us to the zoo I was a happy camper. In fact Henry Doorly Zoo is thing I regret leaving behind when I moved from Nebraska. I have yet to see a zoo that is on par with Henry Doorly I heard States like California have some nice zoos. Texas Zoos can't compare with Henry Doorly.

Favorite Zoo
By ,
We went on our honeymoon and a couple times since we've had kids. I love this zoo, there's so much to see and it is a good day-long trip. It's big enough that the crowds don't seem to be an issue. The penguin house is great, I love the bears. My DH and I, however, do not like the desert dome. If you are like us and have a problem with confined spaces or crowds of people, I don't recommend going in it. Once you go in it's really hard to get out without just trudging along in line slowly. Otherwise, really it's one of my favorite places to take a small weekend trip, we usually pair it with the children's museum.
