Historic St. Charles

Description

Historic St. Charles' Main Street is the only street in the Greater St. Louis area preserved from the 1800s, back when the roads were used for horse and buggy carriages. The street and sidewalk are made of a red cobblestone. The tourism center gives free tours pertaining to the history of the area. There is also a museum dedicated to the Lewis and Clark expedition. Most people who visit the area shop for antiques or arts and crafts in one of the many interesting stores. While here, also take time out to enjoy the several restaurants, bars and ice cream shops located on Main Street.

our date
By TamTam, 5/5/07
When Matt and I went on our first date, we went to old town St. Charles. It was the end of September, and everything was beautiful. The leaves were changing and the smell of wood permeated the air. That night we walked up and down the sidewalks, peering in windows, awing at the sights of beautiful houses. The whole area feels like it belongs about 75 years in the past. Its a very charming place and it means a lot to Matt and I. In fact, we are getting married out there in October 2007.

Relaxing
By curtis, 12/20/05
Old Town St. Charles takes me back in time to a quiet time. It's a wonderful area to take a walk, do a little shopping and just relax. Shop along main street for everything from glassware to turn of the century hand tools. Walk along the river in Frontier Park, enjoy a free concert, visit the boat house. Pick your choice of food from sandwiches to steaks. Did someone say ice cream, I'm always ready to stop and have a scoop. Christmas Season is a time of wonder. Candles light the sidewalks, Santa's from different time periods roam the streets, Chestnuts are roasting on an open fire, Holiday snacks to sample. What a Wonderful time to be in Old Town St. Charles. My wife and I love it!
