Artisanal Fromagerie Bistro & Wine Bar
Artisanal Fromagerie, Bistro and Wine Bar showcases the formidable creativity and passion of Chef-Proprietor Terrance Brennan who adds playful twists to classic French bistro dishes. Selecting only premium ingredients, Brennan's commitment to the use of artisanal, sustainable and organic products is evident in the quality of each dish. Recalling a bustling Parisian bistro, Artisanal's handsome Art Deco interior offers the sophisticated French specialties one might expect in Paris. As the name implies, Artisanal features a scrumptious selection of 250 hand-crafted cheeses from around the world. In the back of the dining room is the cheese cave, a temperature and humidity controlled room, where a number of the world's finest artisanally-made cheeses are aged to optimum ripeness and peak flavor. Adjacent to the dining room is the wine bar, which boosts 75 wines by the glass.
The place to go for wine and cheese... Amazing wine list - boasts over 100 by the glass. Both the cheese fondue (appetizer) and the chocolate dessert fondue are amazing. Excellent escargot in puffed pastry. Service is excellent (minus this one guy in the bar that is relatively scatter brained). Highly recommended.
If you are an autentic cheese lover, this is definately the place to go! A huge range of cheeses, about 300 if I am not mistaken!
The place is very french style, friendly waiters and generally a nice ambiance. The rest of the food on the menu is very tasty, but definatly the cheese is the main highlight!
Don't forget to make a reservation, it gets packed, even on sunday!
Smells like cheese. The first thing that hits you when you enter Artisanal is the overwhelming aroma of good, ripe cheeses -- a bit intimidating for the uninitiated, but complete nirvana for people serious about their cheese. No matter the hour, the dining room always seems full and for good reason. The food is consistently delicious, the portions won't leave you hungry, the service is reliable, helpful (if not a bit serious), the wine list is varied and reasonably priced, and the cheese, ahh yes, the cheese. There are some fine choices among the appetizers, but you owe it to yourself to try a proper fondue at least once. While even the mildest of Artisanal's fondues are a bit strong for the average American palate, if you're really into cheese you'll enjoy the experience. Take your time dipping and enjoying with a good starter wine. There's a nice variety of main courses and I've yet to be disappointed. Kudos to the kitchen for figuring out what works, keeping it simple, and allowing the fresh ingredients and seasonings to speak for themselves. There's no pretense or over-reaching. I feel as though I can order anything on the menu with absolute confidence. For a treat, eschew the sweets on the dessert menu and summon the fromagier (cheese expert) to assist in choosing an assortment of fine cheeses. Enjoy!
I think this restaurant gets some things right. The food was quite good when we dined there last night. The cheese menu was a rare treat and it was interesting to read about all the different combinations of cheeses and accompaniments. The entrees were quite good too, also with interesting flavors and a nice preparation. Where this restaurant really fell down was in its service. The waiter, while seemingly a nice guy, seemed quite flustered while juggling a few tables. We tried to be patient, but our appetizer was forgotten, our red wine was inexplicably ice cold, and our entrees arrived before the appetizer ever showed up. The waiter apologized, but definitely didn't go out of his way. We had to ask for new drinks, bread that never showed up (but did on other tables) and finally for the check. I think they have the food thing down, but they need to work on the service end of things. Like another reviewer said, there are too many other places who can do both, so no need to hurry back.
Artisanal will always keep us coming back. Very reasonable prices and a great, varied menu with excellent daily specials combined with a comprehensive and reasonably-priced wine list come together to satisfy the palate and purse every time. The quality of the food is superb. We started with a basket of gougeres and an excellent bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon priced under $30. We then savored the parmesan gnocchi and then had the hanger steak (cooked to perfection, perfect marbling) with pommes frites. We also had the Tuna Nicoise lightly rolled in cracked pepper corn, sea salt and herbs and then pan seared. Out of this world. We finished off with a cheese plate and an apple tort both of which were great. Excellent bread is just one more indication that this restaurant is committed to your having an excellent dining experience. In addition, the physical plant is above par. An exceptionally clean restaurant with high ceilings that is well ventilated, appropriate lighting, interesting dcor right down to the floor tile reminiscent of a Parisian bistro, superb wait-staff the one of NYCs best selections of cheeses. The staff is well scrubbed, polite, professional and attentive. There are no gimmicks at Artisanal; just excellent food, wine, ambiance and staff. It is an excellent choice for any occasion and highly recommended.
