Have dined at Hilo Bay Cafe since it opened. Always been happy with food, service, wine selection etc. Had dinner there with family on 02/23/08. Dinner was eaten and were finishing drinks. Approached by hostess. Was told if there was nothing else, there were patrons waiting outside, could we please leave.
We have never been asked to leave a restraunt before - NEVER!! Message from the management: eat, drink, pay your tab and leave. Once the bill is settled, your value as a customer is diminished.
Hilo Bay Cafe is a nice quiet restaurant stuck in a shopping center. From the outside, it's not much to look at, but you'll forget all that once you step in side. Soft jazz welcomes you along with a hostess who will show you to your table. Small and intimate, HBC offers some of the best organic restaurant food found on this island. The menu offers a select wine for your entree, (all selections are excellent) and prices are reasonable. All types of entrees are available, and the menu changes often enough that you'll never grow tired of dining here. I do miss the stuffed pork chops, however, there are wonderful new additions to satisfy. It's become our favorite place to dine in Hilo.
This was by far, the best meal we had during our 10 days in Hawai'i, including a visit to two Roy's (both excellent as well).
This place is a real find, tucked in to a shopping center.
The meal was excellent, all four entrees in our party were amazing (try the scallops) and the Kona Coffee ice cream for dessert the best of the trip.
Prices were VERy reasonable for this class of food.
I enjoyed our experience, promptly greeted with a smile, wonderful table in the booth area. The servers were friendly, outgoing and casually professional, which I enjoy because there are no expectations. The food was good, very diifferent from what you usually find in Hilo and the chef is obviously very creative and at home in his kitchen. The desserts were ok, but the drinks we had including coffee and mojitos were sensual and stimulating. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone on the Big Island. Dont let the location throw you, its like a diamond in the rough. . . Ahhhh yes Hilo Bay Cafe, I Love You.
