BOURBON STEAK San Francisco
Award-winning chef and restaurateur Michael Mina brings his signature cooking style and unique culinary vision to BOURBON STEAK. Taking its cues from Mina s stunning Las Vegas steakhouse, Stripsteak at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, this extraordinary San Francisco steak and seafood restaurant showcases modern American fare with a focus on Bay Area produce, purveyors, farmers and ranchers... Guests can look forward to a decadent and mouthwatering dining experience rich in seasonal ingredients, as well as Mina s renowned butter-poached meat, poultry, and classic seafood dishes.
It was nice to see that Michael Mina cares about his resaurant and is still in the kitchen right in the middle of it all. The food was amazing and the detail descriptions given before each course ensured that you know exactly what your eating.
The ambiance was wonderfull and the company was great, however service was unusually slow and confused at best. The food was presented a full hour after placing the order very cold and mostly raw (uncooked}. After dinning and receiving the bill for our dinner we were presented with a statement that was totally of from what we ordered. Overall experince was horrible and the food discusting. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy.
p.s. double check your dinner check.
The 6-course tasting menu must be tried if you go here. Just allow for a few hours to savor all the different flavors and textures. Portions small but rich with flavor and satisfyingly filling. The foie gras was the best I've had, the kobe style beef so tender and flavorful, and the lobster carpaccio was like nothing I've ever experienced. I could definitely see the restaurant's similarities to Aqua. I found the atmosphere more relaxed here, but it's also a little louder since it's practically in the hotel lobby. Service was impeccable and beautifully orchestrated, despite a couple of small goofs, i.e., the expediters taking our bread away two courses prematurely and bringing coffee to our table two courses too soon. Our waiter(s) were friendly and charismatic, but never overdid it. They remained invisible behind the scenes and appeared only when he needed to be there. The experience was memorable and would definitely go back.
We had dinner at Mina with some friends over the weekend and my wife and I were really impressed. The restaurant and the food prepared is on a totally different level (think Gary Danko) and the flavors were powerful and perfectly matched with the sides and garnishes. The service was perfect. The only high-profile restaurant in Northern Cal. that I want to visit (but haven't had a chance) is French Laundry and all I can say is that if it beats Mina ... then I am in for a special treat to say the least. I did the 3 course meal and everything was incredible, including the wine. Go, just once to experience the food.
Experienced the seasonal tasting menu with wine pairings. Loved very single bite. The service is excellent.
It's not cheap, but from the sashimi, to the spice crusted black bass, to the duck roulade, to the baby lamb, to the beef zabaton, to the dessert sampler, every bite was a culinary delight. I particularly like the Rippon Pinot Noir from New Zealand paired with the duck and foie gras.
...for the best meal I've ever eaten. Splurge on the chef's tasting menu. So many flavors, such amazing presentation. Actually had to take a small break between later courses to get fresh air and let my palate take a breather. My only knock is that the restaurant itself isn't very special. Seemed very large and impersonal. Fleur de Lys still wins hands down over Micheal Mina as the most beautiful and romantic dining room in San Francisco.
Michael MIna is a fantastic gastronomic experience that delights all the senses. This restaturant, located in the St. Francis Hotel, ranks among the best and can easily stand up to Gary Danko, Boulevard and the like. The service is amazing, each person at the table get their own person to explain the three different presentations of tastes. The food is prepared with care, and the specialities abound (Iuch as Lobster pot pie). Desserts truly capped off a night of great experiences, and the wine list is fully developed. Other than the price ($$$ four of us with drinks and a bottle of wine was about $800), there is nothing bad you can say about it. (Note, I work for Yahoo but this is a personal review).
Words can barely describe how outstanding this meal was. Hands-down, one of the best meals of my restaurant life. Not cheap, but a great place for a special occasion. (In this case, my brother-in-law's birthday, bankrolled by sister in law).
You have two choices, a 3-course menu (app, main, dessert), or 7-course tasting menu. 3-course costs $88, 7-course $110. (Had to mention this).
Each course is an exploration in culinary ecstasy. For each course, we were served a plate with 6 items to taste, each one paired nicely. Great seafood (sea bass, lobster), meat (veal, kobe beef), and tasty desserts.
All in a lovely setting at the Westin St Francis hotel in Union Square. A definite winner.
