American Jazz Museum
This impressive museum, American Jazz Museum, pays tribute to the performers who helped create the musical style we call jazz. The history of this music form is told through interactive exhibits where you can listen to performances, watch videos and learn more about the greatest jazz musicians. You will also learn about the history of African-Americans artists in Kansas City and their many contributions to our society. The museum, which adjoins the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum , is available on rent for special events as well. Group tours are available. Call ahead or check the website for more details.
This museum is really lacking. What this place lacks is information. My husband is only a casual jazz fan and I am a serious jazz fan. Neither of us got anything out of this museum. Seriously, a big display on Ella, but none for Billie or Sarah? Charlie Parker rightfully gets his full due, but nothing for Miles or Coltrane? Duke Ellington is the only big band guy? And no real details of their careers and how jazz devoloped. They have lots of places to listen to music, but in a muuseum setting it is hard to listen to music that can be 5 minutes and sometimes longer. They have one Billie Holiday song, but she doesn't sing until the last minute. Maybe they should limit the musical selections to the highlights. This was just not a good museuam. I would not recommend it.

I thought everything was terrific....We always bring our family when they come out to visit from the east coast. We are originally from New York and we have family members who played Jazz one toured with Duke Ellington so we all really love Jazz. Everyone Liked the museum....
The jazz museum shares a building with the Negro Basebasll Museum. While I loved the baseball museum, the jazz museum was average at best. Listening to the music was the highlight. Had the jazz museum been a stand alone museum, I would never have gone. If you go, go for the Negro baseball museum.
