Why would anybody spend $16 for Missouri wine?

Hermann, Missouri is sort of a backwater area with a strong German tradition. Lovely, underdeveloped town with unique architecture that reflects its mid-19th century ethnic and Missouri River heritage. At one time, this was a major wine production center, and it is attempting to revive that tradition. Stone Hill Winery is the historic center for both the old and new industries, and is certainly worth a visit. The well-run tour was interesting and included a tasting of about 8 wines for only $2.50.
But then again, they were Missouri wines and generally pretty dreadful. At $10 some would have been marginally acceptable, but at $16 they would only appeal to the most novice drinkers. Not even remotely comparable to similarly priced wines from almost anywhere else in the world ...
