The only remaining fort of many that once stood along the Detroit River, Fort Wayne is an 82-acre site that includes the fort, a barracks, a garrison, a huge parade ground and a newly restored commander's house. It dates to the 1840s and never saw battle, though soldiers were stationed here as late as the 1970s. The fort itself is open to the public only on special occasions. On the premises are the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum , the Medicine Bear Indian Academy and the Mosaic Youth Theatre.

this place is great
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/21/08
i went to the fort wayne as part of a class thing we did last summer and i thought it was a lot of fun. we did all kinds of civil war stuff and had a good time. what the fort needs is a museum or something 'cause there's a lot of old buildings but not a lot to tell you what the buildings are about

it is on it's way back
By Thomas B, 12/25/07
Historic Fort Wayne was a special part of many youngesters childhood memories ranging from tours, events, concerts etc. Today with the assistance of the City of detroit Recreation Dept and it's offical site volunteer partners the Historic fort Wayne Coalition I am seeing a change in the condition of the site. We all need to support this site. It is a special even today hosting scoccer and events. If we all get invovled like the guys who started the historic Fort Wayne Coalition in a positive way and not just sit and point blame we can make a difference- Way to go keeping it alive for all to enjoy. Come down and see it again.

i used to go to a school that was located in there medicine bear it was a world away from the neighborhoods i grew up in. I loved it! So beautiful and untouched for so long.i remember taking walks along the river, looking into the windows of the old buildings and walking along the fort itself.

sadly overgrown and run down
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/28/07
I used to take my children here when they were young. I was very disappointed to see that the grounds were unkempt and the buildings looked run down. I would have thought that the city of Detroit would have kept this historic site in pristine condition. If it were kept up I would love to take my grandchildren to see all the things that their parents and grandparents saw. It wouldn't take a lot to fix up this once beautiful military site.
