Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

Description

The world's largest museum of African American history and culture, this impressive building opened in 1997 and is named after a local doctor and activist who first established it. With 120,000 square feet of exhibit space, the Charles H. Wright Museum includes several exhibit galleries, a research library, classrooms and a museum store. The anchor exhibit, "Of the People: The African American Experiences," uses Detroit's own history to tell the story of the black experience in the United States. Previously, much smaller incarnations of the museum existed, dating back to 1965.

Great place
By ,
Although I hate to compare AAHistory Museums, I mixed this place up with the Dusable in Chicago. This is leaps and bounds better with stunning displays. It is really on par with the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. If you go, take the guided tour because the tour guides really give a great performance that make it a real good memoreable experience! I am bringing my youth group.
I love this museum. It is the beautiful scenery and sounds that really make this an A1 Museum.

I'll be back.
By ,
I like the community based atmosphere. People can go share stories and experiences with different aspects of African American History. I have learned so much in my trips through and have brought many of my friends. It's truly an eye opener for everyone regardless of race, creed etc. I need information about the shows. Cost, schedule. I have just told my friend who has never been there that I would check online to find out what's up for this month. It's African American History month so there's bound to be some really great and fascinating material presented. I'm really looking forward to it.

It was so intresting very informative. It was like walking through history. I felt as though I was right there at that place in time during each display. I think everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.
