Description
The most famous features of the fifth-largest fine arts museum in the United States are the Diego Rivera murals, starkly depicting the artist's view of world history, the industrial revolution and the automobile. They are the gritty, spiritually uplifting center of this vast but manageable museum, whose 100 galleries include more than 60,000 paintings, sculptures and other art objects. Auguste Rodin's famed sculpture "The Thinker" is near the entrance. Impressive permanent collections of Pre-Columbian, Islamic, Flemish, Dutch, African, European, American and Asian art are supplemented by top-notch exhibitions. The museum was renovated and re-opened in 2007, expanding its size by 31,000 square feet. The DIA is an impressive building and a place of both grandeur and contemplation.
Massive collection of art. There is so much to see that you have to keep going back to see it. Very cheap entertainment. Awesome movies shown in the theatre at night.
This is one of my favorite musuems in the country. I spent many many hours there as a teenager and enjoyed my visit. The art exhibits are fabulous...modern art to historic Roman art.
Beautiful buidling with a great art collection. One of the top 10 largest in the world I believe. Attached is the historic Detroit Film Theatre with many interesting offerings. Across the street is the Detroit Public Library Main Branch--another fine building. This area, the DIA very much included, gives a great taste of Detroit's culture and architecture. Two blocks west is Wayne State University's Central Mall.
Good selection of many various forms of art, especially liked the collection of armor, but some of the collections seem a little disorganized. (for example, it always seems to be under renovation)
I enjoy the DIA. I like the new exhibitions they have most often. In addition the eating area is well done. Since I went recently it was in construction. Hopefully they will open it back soon..!
The Detroit Institute of Arts is one of the foremost art museums in the country. The permanent collection is wonderful and the museum brings in interesting traveling exhibitions constantly. The Diego Rivera mural which pays homage to the Detroit autoworkers is a particular treat.
The museum has been renovating different areas for years and will have even more display space soon. I can't wait.
