Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises
A whale watch is a must when visiting Cape Cod. Step aboard a 100-foot boat and travel past the Cape Cod National Seashore to the open ocean. The boats concentrate on an area known as the Stellwagen Bank - a deep fissure in the ocean floor that is home to a favorite whale delicacy, the sand eel. Naturalists narrate during the cruises. There is a snack bar on board and passengers can bring their own picnic. The trip takes about four hours. Admission: $37 adults, $32 ages 62+, $20 ages 4-12.
These people really go out of their way to make sure you have a successful whale watch. My boyfriend and I were visiting Rhode Island from Maryland and while there, made the drive to Cape Cod for the sail. It was an experience well worth it. I should add that we went out on an extremely foggy day, and the crew made every effort to locate the pods (3 seperate pods of finbacks) and continously appologized for the limited sightings. Given the conditions, we were quite impressed by what they were able to find. Just a tip though, bring a jacket or a sweatshirt (or both!)- it gets cold out there! I had to beg my boyfriend to get me a sweatshirt from the on board gift shop. Also, bring cash. It's all that is accepted on board.
I really enjoyed this four hour experience.
I was pretty sure we were falling into a tourist trap but it turned out great.
We saw many whales including a very large finback whale that was so close to the boat that I didn't get good pictures of it. I got a whole frame full of whale skin.
The boat is very large and has comfortable indoor seating for the one hour ride out to where the whales hang out.
There was reasonably priced snack food and beverages available.
This is really cool thing to do on your vacation if you have half a day to devote to it.
