Although referred to as the bike trail, this paved path also welcomes walking, running, horseback riding and rollerblading. And if there is enough snow, (which is rare), you may cross-country ski, too. Built on an old railway bed, the scenic 25-mile (40-kilometer) trail takes you from Dennis to Wellfleet via cranberry bogs, lakes and towns. Nickerson State Park, off Route 6A in Brewster, maintains the trail and is at the halfway point. See the website for a map with other rest areas and access points.

1 reviews for Cape Cod Rail Trail
A very fun and relaxing time...
By Rich, 04/24/06
We really enjoyed the train. We actually rented a cottage on a parcel of property that had a trail leading back through some woods on the property to the scenic trains rails, so we were able to walk back in the morning and wave at the train (and even say hello to some passengers) as it pretty much creeped on by (there was a road crossing a few lots over from our place). We decided to give it a go. It was a little expensive really for what little you actually see from the train. But with 2 children, it was money well spent. We probably wouldn't do it again, because there are much better scenic trains a lot closer to us, and cheaper, that you see more scenery from other than low lying woods and sand, but this is still a wonderful old train ride and supports a great cause, keeping trains running on Cape Cod. So if you appreciate scenic trains, I do highly recommend a journey on this one at least once. I would have probably preferred to wait until we had exhausted other things to do on the cape, and take the train as a relaxing change of pace from running around to beaches and seeing history. We will be returning to the Cape again and again at this point. If it's your first visit to the Cape, and you're not a train nut, and you plan on coming back to the Cape again someday, leave the train for your next trip and enjoy the beauty of the cape elsewhere. Then, when you start running out of things to do, take a train ride! I don't mean this review to sound like I didn't enjoy it and I don't recommend it, I just think some travellers might want to wait on this one until they have explored the capes other goodies. It all depends on your tastes and your energy levels I think. The train is a hit with kids, and could serve as a good option to keep them contained for a bit. They offer very good food on some trains as well. Cheers, RJM
