Leavitt & Pierce Inc.
This Harvard Square tobacconist has been around for more than a century. Not only will you find a wide selection of cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smoking accessories, but an array of other novelty merchandise. Like many other stores in the area, this store stocks Harvard University memorabilia. It also carries a fun selection of shaving kits, board games and antique toys.
With all the good stuff they have, It's a haven for those who find themselves looking for a gift for someone at the last minute(i.e., the 11th hour santa). Even if you do not smoke you can get a hold of some novelty item you can be sure will please that special someone.
This store is by FAR one of my most favorite stores of any type, anywhere. The store has the exact same layout as it did in the late 19th century (look at historical photos for proof!) and carries a fine and wide range of products.
The store carries a very decent selection of cigars including some obscure and difficult to find selections. They also carry a *full* line of smoking accessories, including many pipes, tools, filters, cigarettes and more. Loose tobacco is available in a number of varieties, by the ounce, for pipe smoking. They offer Guillotine, V-cut and punch cuts for your cigars, package individual cigars in ziplocks without needing to ask, proffer matches and are also knowledgeable on all of their cigars. The salesman has seemed to have smoked all of them.
The store carries much more than tobacco products, though. Shaving implements, including straight-blade and safety razors, badger brushes and shaving soaps are available, as are a wide line of men's toilertries. I picked up several varieties of excellently milled European soaps on my last trip there.
The store has an upstairs with chess tables you can rent for $2 an hour, and plenty of other goodies such as flasks, pens, steins, classic gameboards and chess supplies, etc.
The salesman is the most knowledgable salesman I have encountered to date. Not only does he have a commanding knowledge of all of his products in-store, but an impressively wide knowledge of all things relating to them. If you are anywhere in the Cambridge or Boston area, it is highly worth dropping in even if just to soak up the aroma of days past and the history steeped in the antique wood floors and paneling.
It has been there for a long long time (I believe it was established in the late 1800's) and there is good reason why. The place simply rocks. I've been bringing my business there for over 15 years now and they have only ever given me more reasons to keep returning.
I walk into Leavitt & Pierce whenever I pass by to lift my mood. The store is beautiful and the workers are friendly. There are items and aromas that will make you smile. I have spent 30 minutes just smelling the old style soap bars. This store is really a treat.
Wonderful assortment of great cigars at good prices.
Quite a selection of cigarette and pipe tobacco.
And my first pipe, that's been doing me well for 4 years, came from them.
Each time I visit Boston, I visit Leavitt & Pierce.
Leavitt and Pierce is without a doubt the best tobacco shop I've ever known, but they offer much more than just tobacco. The place is brimming with class and quality but is not at all stuffy or snobby. The staff are always friendly and professional.
The selection of everyday to special occasion cigars was excellent. The sales staff was helpful w/o interrupting your "mulling". Offered cutting services of v, guillotine, punch and packaged singles in a zip-loc bag w/ matches. What's not to like?
The place is unique.
I have been buying there Black & Gold Tobacco, pipes, etc. for more than 20 years and each time I come back to the Boston area the first thing that comes to my mind is scheduling a visit
