Perhaps the birthplace of bargain shopping, Filene's Basement's original purpose was to quickly sell off excess merchandise from the department store upstairs. The idea caught on fast with the city's student population. This store is perfect for the stylish yet financially challenged. Shoppers squeeze onto crowded sales floors daily, groping for bargains in designer clothing and shoes. The company claims that this store is the city's second most popular tourist attraction.
Whenever someone stops to ask me "where'd you get that outfit", almost always it was one I picked up at Filene's Basement. I live in the South and have made the trip to D.C. several times, and am going to the original Filene's Basement in Boston this summer on vacation (my husband thinks I'm interested in history.) Unique, chic, designer, funky, flirty, all below retail prices-- who could ask for anything more?
Plan to hunt, that is part of the fun.
My mother shopped there while she was going to school here and returned with me exactly 30 years later to add to my wardrobe. I have never seen so many bargains in one place! This summer, I introduced Filene's Basement to a friend visiting from Poland and she was instantly hooked just as my mother and I had been. If you go once, you will want to go again... hopefully it will still be here when I return with MY daughter. I will shop there as long as I live here in Boston.

I visited Filene's Basement first in 1980 when I went to school in Boston. 20 something years later, I still find it the best place for great deals on designer stuff. Your visit to Boston is incomplete without a trip to Filene's Basement.
