great trains and architecture
This museum was started in 1953 and has a very knowledgeable and friendly staff. The first thing you notice is the huge roundhouse. It's impressive and houses many restored and unrestored trains and rolling stock. Outside the roundhouse is a maintenance building filled with more trains and passenger cars. A train in this building is 1 of 2 that still exists, the other is in the Henry Ford museum in Detroit. They also give train rides, which I didn't have time to do. The day I was there, they had a WWII display of old memorabilia, jeeps and guys dressed in vintage clothing. This is a perfect place for kids, with various scale train layouts (both inside and outside), some huge play areas and lots of space to roam. I travel for business and try to visit museums. I can't think of a train museum that I've enjoyed more. There is a gift shop, a scale model display, and a clock display. Tons of fun, wish I had more time that day.
