American Visionary Art Museum
"Visionary" is a term used to describe art that is created by people who use ordinary media to express their own intensely personal ideas about life. This museum has assembled a wonderful collection of this art. Since Visionary artists generally lack formal training, and work outside of established art traditions, their works are as bold, innovative, and inspirational as the visions that spawned them. Children four years of age and under are free.
No great fans of modern art, we visited purely out of curiosity. And while the exhibit (All Faiths Beautiful until Aug 2008) might not be to everyone's taste, it was certainly effective and affecting, no matter what your faith - or if you even have one. Liked especially the more-or-less interactive exhibit at the entrance. Made me think, certainly - and no, not in a class assignment type of way.
Plan for 1 to 2.5 hrs here. Definitely recommended - although children under 10 may not "get" the experience w/o some guidance. (Of course, it also helped that we went on a rare free admission day;-), as several other great FREE museums are present in town.)
We went there last month and were fascinated! UNFORTUNATELY, no videotaping and/or photos are allowed inside, which is really too bad, because we wanted to share with family and friends back in Germany....Other than that, a really cool place and a "MUST" if you are visiting Baltimore!!!!
I liked the Baltimore American Visionary Museum of Art, it was one of the few things I got to experience in Baltimore with the little time I got to spend there, it is fun for all ages and you get to experience a type of art not neccesarily recognized in many other places or museums. It is very colorful and set up in an interesting way. I liked it a lot and a tip for those of you interested in going, don't forget to go check out the giant guitar chicken and the whole studio out back that I think is originally a school. If you are in rush , you should still check it out because it is worth it.
The American Visionary Art Museum is wonderful. Anyone that has the opportunity to come to Baltimore should definately check it out. It costs around eight dollars, and hours can be spent just wandering around this museum. The art is really interesting and stimulating. It lacks formality but that is what makes it desirable. It is a wonderful alternative and great for any occasion. Check it out!
The exhibits follow a theme (past themes have been "addiction" and "water"). All the pieces are created by people with little or no formal art training; these are naturally talented individuals featuring their highly unusual, unprecidented artwork.
The art is like nothing you have seen before. It will tantalize, please, dismay, stimulate, apall, make you small, cry and leave you utterly spellbound. Here are works by people who have serious mental illness, who are experimental in medium and materials in the best and wildest sense. You will have no idea what to expect next as you go from gallery to gallery because the museum is so different. Sometimes it will feel like a sideshow or freakshow, though I found nothing offensive about any of it. Rather the works draw you into the wildly different worlds of these unknown artists who are clearly trying very hard to express ideas, feelings, wishes, fears, anxieties though art. I cannot imagine anyone not liking the experience. You will walk out of the museum thinking about and looking at things quite differently than any other museum. Definitely not to be missed.
