Westminster Hall

Description

This beautiful stone building is unique for its graves, which were filled in the early 1800s, long before the church hall above them was built. Edgar Allen Poe, Baltimore's founding fathers and four mayors are among those buried here. In the mid-1800s, a swelling population prompted construction of Westminster Hall. To avoid disturbing the graves, the building was set on a series of brick piers over the tombs, creating catacombs. The meeting hall at Westminster can accommodate and audience of 350 seated for lecture meetings and 250 when used for round table discussions.

Got Married There!
By ,
Besides the really neat, historically rich burying grounds, not all that exciting to look at from the outside but... What an absolutely perfect place for an event - especially for a wedding! We got married there and we set it up theater style for the ceremony up on the dias (yes, someone DID play that gorgeous organ)... The dinner tables were already set up on the side platforms/stages below those stunning stain glass windows... then after the wedding it was party time - the chairs were whisked away and the whole wood plank floor was the dance floor! No-one had to drive anywhere in between and best of all, no-one had to wait for hours between ceremony and reception. The upstairs nook was perfect for gathering the bridal party pre-wedding and pre-announcement, and for just overlooking the activity down below. I am still this close to being sorry we didn't hire the "body snatcher" to take our guests for a tour of the catacombs during the reception.
