Maison Bourbon Jazz Club
This is one of those places that you wonder if they ever close. Open doors and no cover charge lure tourists and locals to listen to some of the best music in town. Authentic jazz that is loud and lively is almost non-stop from mid-afternoon to the wee hours of the morning at Maison Bourbon. Players include Wallace Davenport, Steve Slocum and Tommy Yetta. Patrons must be 21 or older. There is a one-drink minimum.
I went to the Maison Bourbon 20 years ago with my wife and it was all I had been told it was and more. The band leader was Tommy Yetta and I was lucky enough to get up and sing with the band, not once, but four nights running. I had a ball and was introduced to the owner who happend to be in town. He gave me two coppies of a print of the Maison Bourbon with a funeral parade heading down Bourbon Street, one of which is now framed and hanging in my home. In my book Tommy was one of the best horn players of the era
We happened upon Maison Bourbon our first night as we were checking out all the different places along Bourbon Street. The place was exactly what I was hoping for; a great little place to listen to some great jazz while enjoying a cocktails. The band was led by the trumpet player Jamil Sharif who is not just a joy to listen to but to watch as well! We ended up going all but one of our nights in New Orleans and even got a chance to talk to Jamil a bit between sets.
I love to sit in Maison Bourbon, listen to the great trad jazz, and watch the hordes go by on Bourbon St.
The drinks are a little pricey, but there's no cover charge, the drinks are strong, and the music heavenly.
It is so nice to get away from the cheap trinkets and fanny-packed tourists of Bourbon Street and step into the Maison Bourbon. This is what New Orleans is all about, one of the few places on Bourbon that native New Orleanians will actually go. The Jazz is great, the drinks are good, and the hospitality is wonderful! A must for anyone visiting the Crescent City.
