Graceland Cemetery & Crematorium
Established in 1860, the Graceland Cemetery and Crematorium is Chicago's most famous cemetery and is on the National Registry of Historic Sites. Recall any important person in Chicago history, and chances are he or she is buried here. Notables whose final resting place is Graceland Cemetary include dept. store tycoon Marshall Field, architect Mies van der Rohe, and railroad inventor George Pullman. Some of the tombs, such as the Getty mausoleum designed by Louis Sullivan, are themselves works of art, complementing the lakes and statues. Take a tour offered by the Chicago Historical Society or by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Do not expect to see any spooks, though. Ghost legends are few and far between, as Graceland stands as an anomaly in this most haunted city.
For many years while I was living in chicago and attending the Artinstitue i would spend entire days in Graceland. There are just too many monuments to list (though the Chicago Hist. Soc does have most every one catalogued) and every season bring such a great change of scenery. This northside attraction is one of my favorites and I hope it becomes one of yours. Also, it's free, and with a camera and a pint in your pocket to keep warm in the winter (cool in the Summer?) it just can't be beat. There are also rumors of hauntings and such. I am not familiar with them all but I believe there is one about a girl in a white dress that pops up frequently.
