Although not one of the country's larger 'Chinatowns', the main drag on Wentworth Avenue is worth the brief side trip from the Loop for the curious. You will find an assortment of shops, restaurants and the butchers with skinned ducks hanging in the windows. Fueled by an influx of money from wealthy Chinese developers looking to diversify their holdings outside of Hong Kong, Chinatown is looking to expand its boundaries. A new shopping center was recently completed, and Chinatown has reportedly been put on the Mayor's list of neighborhoods up for urban renewal and redevelopment.

Going Back
By Glitz, 04/16/09
Chinatown was a new experience for me. While the shops were mostly similar,.. a savy shopper with a good eye will be able to find the different stuff if you look. I wouldn't spend too much time in each store though a quick walkthrough should tell you if its the same or not. When we went last November it was clean and pretty,.. we visited a great bakery and the restaurant we chose,.. The Emperor's Choice was awesome. I will be returning in June this year for a repeat trip. To enjoy ther area go with a plan,.. smile and be friendly,.. we were treated pretty nicely everywhere we went.

Disappointed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/24/09
We were very disappointed with our visit to Chinatown. We found the area to be run down and dirty. The people were not friendly and the food was not good. Very few shops were organized...most were just crammed with merchandise.

It's ordinary place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/16/08
The red line subway stops at the Chinatown. It is very convinient. However, there is not much to see. Cheap and ordinary stuffs. The food is not any special at all. It is not worthy to visit unless you do not have a big Chinese community at your town.

small and cute
By Shelley, 07/07/08
I liked walking through Chinatown... a different expirience. My local city doesn't have a Chinatown so it was a nice visit. Smaller than I thought it'd be though...only a few blocks, but found great buys and good Chinese food :)

A good place to eat.
By Char B, 06/09/08
Chinatown is right off the Redline (Chicago's transit system) so it's very easy to find. This is a great area to have lunch in the middle of the week because it's not croweded. But choose your resturant wisely!

Wasn't what I expected
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/03/08
Overal Chinatown is a very cute and clean place to visit. However its only a couple blocks long and has the same three places over and over again. You can go shopping for something you can buy at the dollar store. But why bother going all the way out there for that. They did have a store with some nice furniture pieces. However the rest of the stores are bakeries and eating establishments. Now I'm sure they had delicious food but I had already ate. So I would say unless your going to eat..don't waste your time. Cause there is nothing to do...of course maybe its better when they have a festival. At least theres would be something to look at.

Watch your parking meter!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/05/07
Our experience in Chinatown was cut short due to a dishonest metermaid. We parked and put 2 hours on our meter and when we came back an hour and twenty minutes later we had a ticket on our car saying our meter expired, but the meter still had 40 minutes left! We went into the business where we parked in front of and the worker said she noticed the metermaid putting the ticket on and she also had seen us when we parked so she went out & checked the meter and saw that at the time we had 1 1/2 hours left!!! Long story made short, we had to write the city of Chicago and fight the ticket. After months of correspondence, they decided to drop the ticket. The experience was bad enough that we don't plan to ever go back again!

You have to go!
By Brandy C, 01/30/07
I love China Town. I'm from Wilsonville IL. My mom and I got to Chicago almost every year. She is a tax preparer and we go after peak is over. (which is coming soon;) Anyways, China town has the best shopping. Everything is really well priced. The bakerys are AMAZING!! We always leave with 4 grocery bags full of treats to take home to family and friends. Also Hoy Polo, the awesomeist store ever is tucked away there on the main drag. It is a little pricey compared to the rest of the shops, but OH the things they have in there!! The people are very friendly all around... and China Town is one of the main reasons we go to Chicago.. There is also a free parking lot right next to the main road.

Chicago's Chinatown Worth It!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/04/07
I really enjoyed our trip to Chinatown in Chicago. Although it is smaller than other Chinatowns and there are fewer shops, there are some good shopping deals. Also, the streets are clean and open. The food was good and inexpensive. I would definitely return!

Half way decent
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/26/06
Definately worth a side trip, but don't plan more than an hour or two. It is just like being in China but cleaner, although the people were less friendly than when I was in China. If you're looking for goodies to buy that are authentic, this is the place to go. Lots of good buys for stuff like clothing, purses, vases and jade. The bakerys that line Wentworth are also a great place to stop for some yummy Chinese treats. We didn't eat dinner so, I can't attest to the food. Overall, I'm glad that I went to check it out.
