It's loud. It's noisy. It's teeming with kids. It's got kitsch o'plenty. That's right, it's Joe's Be-Bop, where you can chow on Southern food while listening to hot jazz. Dive into Smoked Chicken Quesadillas, Baby Back Ribs, Chicken Pasta and other tex-mex-southern-Italian-whatever-else-you've-got-in-the-pot fare. When the tourist season is over, it draws an interesting crowd. This is also a cool place to take the kids in order to introduce them to a music they might otherwise ignore. The music begins nightly after 6p.
This was our first meal in Chicago during our vacation. It was HUGE disappointment. We waited for 15 minutes before anyone took our order. And only then because I got up and asked the host to find our waiter. The waitress was friendly but never offered refills.
My daughter orderd the $5 peanut butter sandwich. It was a big glob of jelly with barely any peanut butter. One whiff told you it was old peanut butter at that.
My burger was from a frozen patty like you get at a fast food place. Not what you would expect for $9.
We ended up eating outside because it was so stuffy inside you couldn't breathe. THe whole experience made me want to get back on the train and go home. Fortunately, the rest of the trip was great.
If you like southern food, you'll love Joe's Be-Bop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. The main dishes are very good. There side dishes are excellent especially their corn bread. The atmosphere is nice. The service is very friendly and the music is superb. They have different acts every night. I've been there twice and both times the music was great and the food was good too. The prices are fair and there is no cover charge.
