When you are in the mood for generous portions of Italian food, this is a fun, satisfying place. The lunch menu is limited, and, if smoking isn't your thing, you get a choice of seating at night, but not in the afternoons. Lunch is served only in the smoking area bar. Remember this restaurant for supper. Live piano and jazz accompany your seafood or meat dishes most nights. Average meal costs $29.
We had 7:30 PM reservations, were seated promptly at a corner table with close proximity to the live music, and looked forward to a leisurely meal. We quickly ordered wine and appetizers (baked clams, and blue point oysters) which arrived without delay and were delicious. Three diners ordered simple pasta dishes and one diner ordered a veal chop (medium rare). 1 1/2 hours after ordering, our waiter (who appeared by this time to be avoiding us) came to the table and stated that the veal chop was holding up our dinners. Our food finally arrived at 10:30 ( a full 2 1/2 hours after ordering). The pasta dishes were ok (certainly not unique or outstanding), the veal chop was well done and dry. When this was brought to the attention of the waiter, we were told it was the last veal chop in the house. Veal saltimbocca was ordered in its place and arrived piping hot within 10 minutes.
After eating, the manager was called to our table and he offered a seemingly insincere apology ("it's a very busy night and everyone's wait is longer than usual"). We were comped one of three bottles of wine. We would never have had three bottles of wine had we not waited so long for our dinner!
Our total check excluding the comped bottle was $273 (prior to tip).
There are fabulous restaurants in Chicago. This is not one that we will return to, nor will we recommend it to our friends who visit.
The seafood was delicious. It was well seasoned and fresh. The appetizers were large portioned. The salads were full of various veggies. The atmosphere was relaxing, energetic and positive. The staff carried themselves professionally and were kind and accommodating. Our server was sensitive to our desire to take our courses at a relaxed pace.
I would highly recommend this place for individuals that desire to have their dining an experience in excelent taste, great atmosphere and pleasurable dining. It's the whole package.
I was having a lovely dinner with a group of my friends and the meal was excellent. after our meal a COCKROACH, thats right, a cockroach crawled toward me by my glass of water and guess what the manager did to compensate......took $30 off of our meal which was more than a slap in the face. needless to say i will never return to that place!
