National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific

Description

This is the final resting place for 34,000 veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as Challenger casualty Ellison Onizuka. Marble walls flanking the monumental staircase list the names of American heroes missing in action. A 30-foot statue of Lady Columbia symbolizes all grieving mothers. There is a sweeping view of Diamond Head to the glistening bays of Pearl Harbor. In ancient times, the crater of the long-dormant volcano served as a site of human sacrifices. Admission is free.

Very moving

The historic knowledge gained by this visit, along with the reality of the ultimate price paid by so many make this a place I will recommend to friends visiting the island.

History info I missed in school
By ,
The side murals at the top of the monument show the "war room" scene of the battleships and aircraft movement in the Pacific as the war progressed. It is one thing to read about it but to see it as the months and years went on was something I'll remember. My 13 year old grandson was so impressed at the sight of the number of gravesites.

A very moving experience!
By ,
Punchbowl is sacred ground honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in military service to our country. Located in the crater of a volcano, the National Cemetery of the Pacific is the final resting place of those who lost their lives during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. The Punchbowl is a "must see" for all of those who are interested in our nation's history. Beautiful vistas of Honolulu, Diamond Head, and the mountains of Hawaii. Visiting this national cemetery was one of the highlights of our Hawaiian vacation.

A really emotional place! Really reminds you of how many people have paid the ultimate cost for our country! Little irrating that they are out of room, and they found room to bury some congress woman who protested the wars. But whatever

My visit to the Memorial Cemetary in Honolulu
By ,
I went last October to the cemetary. I was 2 years old (and I am 65 years old now) when my father Bill was killed in a shipping accident during WWII in Hawaii. I had wanted to viist there my whole life. My daughter, age 37, my granddaughter age 6, a friend of mine and my daughter's husband went together. We put flowers on my father's grave. I was so impressed with the Punch Bowl Memorial Cemetary. It was clean and just beautiful. I am so glad my dad is buried there. Everyday tour buses go through there. What a blessing for me and my family. Be sure to go there when you go to Honolulu. It is so pretty and just a special place to visit. Bless, you Charla in Oklahoma

Beautiful, Historical, and Free
By ,
This is a good tour for those on a budget or those who like history. Dont bother w/ the bus tours if you have rented a car you can drive yourself there for free. Just get a good map! The lookout over Honolulu is beautiful.

A Beautiful and Peaceful Cemetery
By ,
This cemetery is absolutely beautiful with so much history within. When a memorial ceremony takes place, so many come to show love and appreciation for our military loved ones who've passed. The pride of the military definitely is thick in the air of this cemetery. The bathrooms are very clean. The monument and history wall are high above the grounds with an absolutely gorgeous wide stairway leading up to it. The scenery around this cemetery is breathtaking. It's definitely a place of pride, serenity, peace and beauty.

Good bye Dad
By ,
I just returned after inurnment of my Dad on 8-16-07 who served in the Pacific with the Navy (1943-1945. He will remain in the most beautiful place in the world, as safe as yesterday. The Navy Honor Guard dignified this moment with Taps and presentation of our country's flag on behalf of the President and a grateful nation. Please include the niche gardens on your tour and say hello to Eric F. Wilkinson, S-3, LCI(G) 751. This beautiful place is a link to the best of who we are as a people, and as a country. Walk through the memorial, be inspired by it, then take its beauty and meaning and go back home to make a difference in your own way.

Will definitely go back on return visit
By ,
This was one of our favorite places that we visited on our first trip to Honolulu. It was a very moving and emotional experiene and a beautiful tribute to all who are remembered there. It is a beautiful place with flowers and a beautiful view. While we we there we had the great pleasure of hearing an elderly local man who was sitting in the Chapel singing "Amazing Grace". We stayed in the back of the Chapel so as not to disturb him as he sang with tears rolling down his face. We will definitely go there again on our next visit.
