Honolulu Zoo

Description

An attractive flamingo pond greets you at the entrance of this 42-acre municipal zoo in Waikiki. Rare wildlife inside the lush park includes the Hawaiian nene goose, Francois monkeys and Galapagos tortoises. There is a children's petting zoo with llamas and a retired milk cow. Just before, during, and after a full moon, the zoo's special "Zoo by Moonlight" guided tour offers an uncommon glimpse of the habits of nocturnal animals.

Our grandchildren love the Honolulu Zoo
By ,
We like the size of the zoo. It's easy to get around and see everything. There's a nice variety of animals for a small zoo. The children love the playground and grandma and grandpa like taking a break and watching them play. We visit here twice a year and always go to the zoo. The elephants just got a new home which we will be going to see.

Lovely Little Zoo
By ,
As a zoologist and former zookeeper I've seen a lot of zoos. While the Honolulu Zoo is small the variety of animals is great. The only place on the island to see snakes. All the animals are healthy, happy, and well cared for. Easy to see in half a day or linger over an entire day. For those who complained about the cost just remember it pays to take care of a lot of anmals, many endangered. The cost to get in and gift shop purchases does not cover all the animal care but it helps. Worth a look if you need a place to relax and are on the island for more than a couple of days. We go every time we visit. With a membership you can ectually get discounts at other zoos Family friendly. Great for couples. Great if you want a day to yourself. Easy Parking. Easy to find.

Beautiful and relaxing
By ,
We visit the zoo in every city we stay, and this zoo was small but nice. The animals looked healthy and it was clean. They have the most turtles we have seen in one place and got to watch feeding time. It was a great afternoon relaxation for us. We are going again in June 2012 and plan to visit the zoo again. It was my husbands favorite. I would recommend it to everyone. Just remember if you are use to big zoo's like Tampa, Memphis, Cincinitti, this one is about 1/5 the size but beautiful.

Not a great experience
By ,
First I would alert prospective visitors that there is inconspicuous signage in the parking lot and no meters, but you are expected to locate and purchase a parking pass or you will be ticketed as I was, $25 which if not paid in 10 days escalates to $45. This felt too much like a scam, and the third-world zoo did little to sweeten the experience. Visibility of many of the animals was limited if not impossible, directional signage not very helpful, and the place and a lot of the animals just didn't look very clean or well kept.

ok
By ,
it was nice, the tiger exhibits are pretty cool. THe elephant exhibit is terrible. THe food is expensive and ok. THe shave ice melts quickly. THe kids zoo is the best part. It's brand new too. Watch out for the peacocks walking around the zoo freely.

I felt like a kid again
By ,
What a bright beautiful landscaped zoo with such lively and vivacious animals. Truly thrilling to see all of God's creations together in what I would call the most beautiful place on the planet.

better zoo's on mainland
By ,
Thank you for this info. The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska is great! We will vacation in Hawaii in April 2008 and NOT attend this site with our children 8 & 10. When we were in Hawaii in 2007 and questioned the quality.

Best Zoo Ever!!!
By ,
Best thing about the zoo is the Children's Zoo located in the zoo. Fish tank & Guinea Pig exibits are the best! You can go in with the goats,(don't be afraid!). Bird exhibits are cool. The zoo is pretty clean! 1 down point,we didn't see the lions, cheetahs, alligators, wild dogs, and tigers. And we we're there arond 9:30.Guess they thought it was to hot.:(

The Animals Looked So Sad
When we went the first time we found the zo to be dirty and it seemed like the exibits were never completed. The glass enclosure for hippo viewing was so dirty that we couldn't see the hippo. The elephant was chained and just moving back and forth. So sad. The second visit it was the same and that was a year later. This is a crying shame. Are the animals getting good care there?
