Mission Houses Museum

Description

Protestant missionaries established their headquarters on this site in 1820. The prim New England-style white Frame House dates to 1821. The Coral House, so named because it was built from blocks of coral, houses the original iron and mahogany printing press. Descendants of the state's missionary families operate the museum. Museum tours are given daily. On Kama`aina Days "living history" guides dressed in period costume demonstrate 19th-century life in Hawaii. Check website for details.

Real Eye-opener!
By ,
This is a real treat in the middle of downtown Honolulu! Lovely giftshop, good cafe. Can view museum through a tour or by walking around the outside of the grounds with a brochure. Tour was fantastic - guide tailored it to our groups' specific interests (dec arts and cultural changes when missionaries came). Guide really knew her stuff and made experience thought provoking and fun.

Great Tour!
By ,
The guided tour was outstanding. Our guide not only painted a vivid picture of the missionaries and their lives, but also provided great insights about the native people of Hawaii and how the coming of the missionaries changed their lives. Our tour guide had actually read the journals of the missionaries and the early Hawaiian royalty and had wonderful detail to tell us, and answered all of our questions.

Take your time, this will be a nice stop.
