Kailua Beach Park

Description

Windsurfers, a breed apart from regular humans and similar to wave surfers, travel from far-distant corners of the world to hit this top windsurfing beach. When the water is flat, they simply sit and wait. When the wind starts, they head here in droves. If you are not a windsurfer, you can still enjoy the warm waters and gentle surf of this famous, beautiful beach. Barbecue facilities, bathrooms and showers are available.

Kayaking in Kailua!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/31/07
We took a guided kayak tour of Kailua Bay through Mokulua Kayak Guides and it was amazing. Probably the highlight of our trip. We unfortunately were staying in Waikiki, and not Kailua, but they came and picked us up from Waikiki and brought us over to the beach at Kailua. Our guide showed us turtles, birds and other wildlife, as well as explained the history of the area and geology stuff. Next time we really hope to stay in Kailua, the beach is so wide and long and not crowded at all. The perfect spot to relax.

Never crowded
By DeerfieldMom, 4/21/07
When we moved back to Hawaii, we deliberately took a smaller home just for the privilege of living near this beach. It is a great family beach, and on weekends although the lot might be full and the grass park filled with birthday parties and other large groups, once you get to the beach all it takes is a short walk and you'll feel like you have your own private beach. Sometimes the water is filled with rolling waves and lots of boogie boarders, from children barely out of diapers (like mine) to 90 year olds (one of our neighbors). Other times it is calm as glass and bluer than you can believe. You will almost always see kite-boards and windsurfers a little offshore and kayaks. However, the beach is so wide and long, it never feels crowded. If you're in Waikiki, make sure to rent a car for the day, drive over the Pali (stop at the the Lookout to get a sneak preview of the beach) drive through Kailua town and get a bento from Fat Boys (hot dog, garlic chicken, fried spam, teri-beef, mahi-mahi and rice for under $6!!) and head for the beach.

Best Beach on Oahu
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/25/07
Me and my husband go to Hawaii every year and Kailua Beach is by far our favorite place. Just this past December I was swimming at Kailua Beach park and I saw a head pop up out of the water about 10 ft away. It was a curious sea turtle. Water is a beautiful clear aqua blue without the crowds. We like it so much we are planning a move to hawaii in the next 6 years or so and hope that we will be able to find a place we can afford in Kailua.

Wonderful beach
By EscargotGinny, 10/4/05
No wonder it was voted the best beach in America in 1998. Soft sand and clear water. Awesome for swimming. Even though it is on the windward side, the waves are considerably smaller compared to other beaches on a windy day. It is not crowded on weekedays. You still have a lot of space between among the beach towels. The location is convenient and the facilities are satisfactory.

Best money spent on our trip
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/4/05
The cost of a house rental near the beach is a little more than a hotel room with 72,000 daily tourists in Waikiki. On the busiest day we saw maybe 12 people. We could go to all of the tourist places and still come back to ouur own beach everyday.

The Best Family Beach In Oahu
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/3/05
I lived in Kailua for 9 months and this was my favorite beach. Much less crowded than Waikiki or any of the other leeward beaches. There's plenty of grassy space to lounge on and people often set up tents or shelters for cookouts. No way you could do that in Waikiki! Also, the restroom facilities are readily available and clean. One con is parking. The lot is small and the street parking fills up quick if it's a weekend day or holiday. Get there early or be prepared to walk a bit. Because this beach is on the windward side of Oahu, it tends to be much windier and as a result a little bit cooler at this beach. But once you're in the water it's hard to tell the difference. This isn't a good beach for boogie boarding or surfing since the waves are kind of small. It's an awesome beach, though, for wind surfing and kites. The wind can get very strong! Some of the fastest wind surfing I've seen was at Kailua.
