Saint Augustine by-the-Sea Church
Established in 1854 by some of the original Hawaiian settlers, this magnificent edifice stands out among the high rises and condos of Waikiki. It is obviously a building with a history—you can tell even before reading the placard above the entryway. If the church is imposing and majestic from the outside, it is awe-inspiring from the inside. Full-length stained glass windows and a tiered ceiling ornament the vast interior. Behind the church is the Father Damien museum and a group center for disadvantaged Tongan youth.
We liked it until we found a nondenominational service

As frequent tourists to Waikiki, we used to attend mass here. This is a very pretty church next to the Waikiki Marriott. It is definitely worth a visit.
However, last year we found a FANTASTIC nondenominational church nearby, where we felt warmly welcomed, like family.
It's called Horizon Honolulu, and we found them through their website. Services are held on second floor of the nearby Golf Club, all glass windows and open doors to the balmy tropical breezes and palm trees.
Hawaiian Pastor Francis leads many outreaches for the needy in Oahu through a program called "Jesus Loves You." He is a wonderful pastor, loving, and extremely funny.
We hear a Christian service is offered at Hilton Hawaiian Village on the beach, but we haven't attended it yet.
We have been to St Augustines many times in the five years we vacationed there. I had hoped to be able to go to the adjoining Father Damian museum, but it was not open. This is a friendly parish where all
Our first visit to St. Augustine was a sunday service three days before our son's wedding day. The church is large, but the feeling was warm and welcoming. The church was filled with flowers and we loved how the sun was streaming through the stain glass windows. The Parish priest worked with my son and daugher in law, and helped make this special day spectacular. The church provided a singer for the service; Her voice was beautiful. The photographer took amazing pictures.
Thank you St. Augustine for a memoral day.
I had the pleasure of attending St. Augutines for close to a year and attended the Tongan Mass on Sunday at 5:00. I would like to purchase their CD and have requested it on the website but am still waiting for a response. It was a truly wonderful Hawaiian Mass which I miss so much. I also miss Father Lane Akiona - truly a treasure. I will be back!
Its characteristic green pointed roof is a landmark near Wailili beach.
Masses begin at 8am each day and afterward a quick tour of Fr. Damien's
personal relics and momentos can be seen under glass in a corner of the church.
Very much worth the visit.
Nearby too are fast food restaurants such as Burger King.
I have lived on Oahu almost two years, and have met many people, both native Hawaiian and "haole" who have been very gracious about educating me about Hawaii culture, history and etiquette. I'm very grateful that I have a friend who has lived here several years, who lets me know when I mispronounce important Hawaiian words or do something offensive, so that I won't do it again, ignorant of the implications of my comments.
I'd like to gently remind the author of this description that this church was certainly NOT built by "original settlers." The idea that European immigrants to a place with an established government and long history are "original settlers" is very ignorant, at best, and very, very offensive, at worst.
Please reconsider changing this description to be more accurate. It was built by "early missionaries" or "some of the first Westerners to arrive," not "original settlers."
I can't wait to go see this beautiful place!
It is nice to know that a catholic church is just right there in the middle of tall buildings. The church is always open anytime you visit. They have service 7am and 5pm everyday and more on Sunday.it is a beautiful church. Don't miss it.
