Diamond Head State Monument

Description

This crater of an extinct volcano got its name when Western explorers mistook calcite crystals they found there for diamonds. The historic trail to the 761-foot summit starts inside the crater and is an easy, but steep, 45-minute hike to the top. Stay on the trail, wear appropriate footgear and sunscreen, take along water and bring a flashlight to light the paths through the tunnels. Those who reach the summit are rewarded by a spectacular 360-degree view of O'ahu.

Risking your life for small payoff
By ,
You pay a fee of course but this trek is somewhat dangerous and only for the physically hearty. Spacing in the fencing over 70 foot drop would allow a child to fall thru. Just to be able to say, "Ive been to the top of Diamond Head" may not be worth it. Lost climb of steps with no railing. There is simply too many other sites to see without the risk.

Good way to get the heart pumping
By ,
I love the slow hike up to the top and the veiw was great while going up. I was a little rough when I got to the stairs because of the angle of them and other people were going slow which made it more tough. But once I got to the top It was GREAT!!

The food was amazing as was the nightly horizons show. Best luau experience ever. The price is kind of high. Make sure to arrive early to see as much as possible. If you plan to arrive after 1pm, you may as well just get the twilight package instead and save some money. The staff is incredibily friendly. Since it is run by BYU, their is no caffeine in their coffee or soda at the luau.

A nice hike with a great view
By ,
Go earlier in the morning when it is a little cooler and the crowds have not yet arrived. It is worth the walk to the top for the views and the exercise.

A perfect view
By ,
Hike up Diamond Head. The view is priceless. Even if you are unable to complete the straight vertical you will not be sorry that you hiked it. You feel like you can see forever. Remember the water. That way you can go up and down without any problems. Hiking up a volcano offers a view that you cannot get just from an hill. would do it again,

Honolulu is always on my list for vacations year round.
By ,
I have been to a lot of placess in a lot of different countries, but Honolulu, Hawaii is the number one place for romantic vacations. Ihe weather is perfect year round, the people are friendly, and the island is so beautiful. I have been there numerous times. I was stationed there in 1966, and since then, I have brought my wife there. She loves it, also. I just can't say enough about Honolulu. I could live there. I love the music, too.

LEAVES YOU BREATHLESS
By ,
The very first thing I saw after spending over 4hrs on a non-stop flight to be with my girl was Diamond Head pushing itself out throught the tropical colored waters toward the plane and sky. It really did take my breath away! Although we had no plans to go sigh-seeing as soon as I landed I ask my girlfried (soon my wife) if it was close enough to go see. We jumped in her jeep she had rented for the day because she resides on another island and off to the volcano we went.Volcano! Can you even imagine! With the warm grean and blue pacific surf and foamy waves rushing up towards this enormous natural wonder is something I will never forget! It does not matter how many times you see or go to Diamond Head, because each time it will still touch you spiritualy and put a smile on your face. Mahalo for taking the time to share my experience! Much Aloha to each and everyone! Peace Out!
