Diamond Head State Monument

Description

This crater of an extinct volcano got its name when Western explorers mistook calcite crystals they found there for diamonds. The historic trail to the 761-foot summit starts inside the crater and is an easy, but steep, 45-minute hike to the top. Stay on the trail, wear appropriate footgear and sunscreen, take along water and bring a flashlight to light the paths through the tunnels. Those who reach the summit are rewarded by a spectacular 360-degree view of O'ahu.

LEAVES YOU BREATHLESS
By ,
The very first thing I saw after spending over 4hrs on a non-stop flight to be with my girl was Diamond Head pushing itself out throught the tropical colored waters toward the plane and sky. It really did take my breath away! Although we had no plans to go sigh-seeing as soon as I landed I ask my girlfried (soon my wife) if it was close enough to go see. We jumped in her jeep she had rented for the day because she resides on another island and off to the volcano we went.Volcano! Can you even imagine! With the warm grean and blue pacific surf and foamy waves rushing up towards this enormous natural wonder is something I will never forget! It does not matter how many times you see or go to Diamond Head, because each time it will still touch you spiritualy and put a smile on your face. Mahalo for taking the time to share my experience! Much Aloha to each and everyone! Peace Out!

Good way to get the heart pumping
By ,
I love the slow hike up to the top and the veiw was great while going up. I was a little rough when I got to the stairs because of the angle of them and other people were going slow which made it more tough. But once I got to the top It was GREAT!!

LOVED IT

The hike up this mountain was truly very exhausting!!! and if you're like me I very rarely do hikes, but when you reach the top of the mountain the view is Breath-taking!!! But honestly saying if we had to do it again, we would do it in a heartbeat! If you go to any 1 place in Hawaii for sightseeing put this on the top of the list!

Coming Down is a Snap!
By ,
I thought they were kidding about the uphill hike to the top of Diamondhead, but they weren't. It's almost a mile of straight up hiking with multiple turns along a steep mountainside and stairs that seemed to lead all the way to heaven! For those of us that aren't in quite as good shape as we'd like to be, it was quite a challenge. The good news that another hiker shared, is that coming down is a snap - by comparison to the unending climb. The top is worth the view, and maybe if I'd known it was as hard as it was, I wouldn't have done it. But now I can proudly show my certificate and say: I made it to the top!

Worth the effort
By ,
Incredible views! This walk, however, is not for small children or the elderly. The climb gets progressively steeper and is very difficult for the last 200 yards or so. It was very hot the day we went and that added to the difficulty.

Breathtaking, Fantastic, A Must See!
By ,
It's a long, steep, treacherous hike to the top of Diamond Head, but worth every step! The view from the top is breathtaking! It's amazing. Alot of rainbows, ocean views, and city views awaits you at the top. It's a surprise actually, because you have no idea what the view is going to be like till you reach the top! A must see for everyone visiting the island of O'ahu or the city of Honolulu!! Diamond Head is also a very common landmark that Hawaiians use on the island in order to give you directions, example: "go toward diamond head and turn right." Just do it! Visit Diamond Head! Aloha!

Awesome!
By ,
Exhilirating! What a site! It was a hard climb though, especially the stairs leading to the top. But it was all worth the cracking of my joints and the shortness of breath. Because when i reached the highest point and saw the view from up there, it just took my breath away.

What a climb, but what a view!
By ,
Be forewarned. This is a long hot climb. But the views are worth it. Pace your self. Take water and a flashlight. Wear comfortable shoes. And no problems bro. Enjoy da view.
