This crater of an extinct volcano got its name when Western explorers mistook calcite crystals they found there for diamonds. The historic trail to the 761-foot summit starts inside the crater and is an easy, but steep, 45-minute hike to the top. Stay on the trail, wear appropriate footgear and sunscreen, take along water and bring a flashlight to light your way through the tunnels. Those who reach the summit are rewarded by a spectacular 360-degree view of O'ahu. The tunnel gates close promptly at 6p. Admission: USD1 per person, USD5 per vehicle.

KIDS CAN HIKE TOO!
By ANA, 06/10/09
I took my 2 kids with me. One is 3 yrs and the other is 10yrs. it was a little rough for the little one but we took our time and made it to the top without problem. The view was amazing . We climbed inside the area where there used to be gun turrets (it was pretty cool) the most fun part for them was going back down running. while at the top they can issue you a certificate for making it all the way. The kids feel acomplished and so do I. I recommend it to anyone with kids, except babies. it gets quite hot. go in the morning when its not to hot. Trust me! Don't worry at the end of the hike you can have a rewarding shave ice treat ahhhh!

Take Snacks and Water
By knwitall, 01/23/09
This was a good hike, pretty inense for people who don't hike seriously hike. Prepare for sore legs. We are in good shape and it took us about half hour to get up if I can remember correctly. I wouldn't do it again, but it was definitely worth doing it once. You get a good idea for the island and how it's set up. If you want to beat the crowds, don't go first thing in the morning like all the books say. Everyone reads those books! We wanted to go at 7:30 but accidentally slept in and didn't get there until maybe 9:15. By then all the tourists were already coming down in one big herd, so it was good for us not to have to encounter so many people at the top.

Worth the experience
By esq, 11/03/08
This is about a 45 minute walk to the top of the crater. It costs $1 to enter the park and I got a taxi to take me and the wife there for $10 and $15 back to the Waikiki area. Pictures you get to take up there are awesome with the ocean in one view, the crater in another, and Honolulu in one more. Quick, easy, and inexpensive

Very neat
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/23/08
It is haaard work getting to the top but you'll be proud of yourself when you get there and the view is magnificent. It is hot so bring lots of water and good, comfy tennis shoes - no flip flops. Suncreen is essential and a hat is nice. Watch your step;, the path is bumpy. The stairs are pretty steep and there isn't much room to slide by the people coming from the opposite direction. The spiral staircase near the top is even worse - very, very little room to pass somebody. The top is a bit crowded but the view is great and the breeze is nice. Oh the tunnel is a little confining and stuffy since you'll probably be huffing & puffing for air. No need for a flashlight though - its lighted.

Awesome Hike
By Jen&Mike H, 03/20/08
Hiking up Diamond Head is a must do for visitors to Oahu because its inexpensive ($5 per car) and the view of Waikiki below is amazing. We got some excellent pictures. One word of caution - its very hot there and it doesnt rain alot on that area of Oahu, so take lots of water and go in the early AM. Those 200 plus stairs are a killer but worth it. Take your time going up to enjoy the view. Lots of people power up the trail and miss the journey to the top. I even saw older people taking this hike, so just about anyone can do it!

Honolulu is always on my list for vacations year round.
By larry, 02/04/08
I have been to a lot of placess in a lot of different countries, but Honolulu, Hawaii is the number one place for romantic vacations. Ihe weather is perfect year round, the people are friendly, and the island is so beautiful. I have been there numerous times. I was stationed there in 1966, and since then, I have brought my wife there. She loves it, also. I just can't say enough about Honolulu. I could live there. I love the music, too.

precious view and excellent memories
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/11/08
my husband and I loved the hike it was misty on the day we hiked so we had our umbrella. It was so much fun hiking and going thru stairways and sometimes doing a little crawling but that was the hole excitement. We will always remember the fun we had and WOW what a view once you get to the top it is so beautiful.
