Hanauma Bay Marine Preserve

Description

Famed for its beautiful horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and clear, calm, turquoise waters, this natural marine sanctuary is home to thousands of colorful tropical fish. The waist-deep water inside the reef is perfect for novice snorkelers to explore. More experienced snorkelers might want to check with the lifeguard before venturing beyond to deeper waters to see sea turtles and other marine life. The Bay is least crowded in the early morning or late afternoon.

Not as great as expected.
By ,
Lines were long even though we got there early. The water is not very clear, and we saw less fish at the bay than we did on the North Shore at Shark's Cove. Crowded, restrooms were out of order ... not alot to like.

The best time!!!!
By ,
We visited this beautiful place last June, and yes, there was a LONG wait to get into the Bay, but it was worth it.
The water was clear, we saw a ton of awesome fish, and are planning to go back very soon. Don't miss it! Experience it for yourself!

Hawaiian Honeymoon
By ,
This Bay is beautiful!! This was not something we had on our schedule but I talked by new husband into and we had a great time. We went on Monday and got there at 12:00 we did not have to wait in a line at all. We did have to wait for the movie but it was only for 5 minutes. The people working at the bay say that Mondays are normally the slowest day because people coming to Hawaii usually get there on Saturday or Sunday and they don't plan the snorkeling until the end of the trip. We went through Tommy's Tours and we were picked up near our Hotel and given snorkel gear so we had it when we got to the bay!! We would defiantly love to go back!! We highly recommend to bay a underwater camera here on the main land becaus they are very expensive in Hawaii!

Touch the fish
By ,
We went back for the first time in six years. It was not quite as nice as I remember it. They have done a great job remodelling the visitors' center, but the bay seemed more cloudy with not as many fish. They still come right up to you and if you have never been here you will have an amazing experience. Bring a mask, or you can rent one there. You may want an underwater camera also.

Feel like a Native Hawaiian
By ,
When you enter the Hawaiian Islands it is important to enjoy the tropical weather, as well as absorb a little Hawaiian culture. You are going to the Hawaiian islands; you want to have a fun packed, but very relaxing experience that truly defines the tropics. You have to enjoy Hanauma Bay, and all it has to offer your vacation. Truly beautiful. For starters it is very, very well priced. As a matter of fact I've been there three times, it has not yet gotten old, and I'd gladly pay twice what they charge to get into the park. Your entrance price may give you a misconception that you should not expect too much from the bay since you are not paying very much. Not the case at all. It is very much worth their price. After you've entered you'll be greeted with a short, too the point video to give you education and understanding of the origin of the bay, and how to preserve it's natural appearance. After the video, you will be released to head down a hill, which is fabulous for the active person who loves to capture the memories of their wonderful experiences on camera. It is Fairly long, but thats ok, because they have very reasonably priced trolly that will give you a nice ride to the bottom, and of course to the top, which is the way most people find the trolly to be a blessing, since many of us in this bay will have had so much fun, we are not going to want to walk up a hill too our vehicle when the ride up is so cheap. The bay looks so beautiful, that you could take a picture from any angle, and make beautiful postcards of them. It is a great place to snorkal, always many species of sea life, so many fish, and turtles, and coral reaf plants, and other people just enjoying the company of one another. The bay is large so the sand does not always get stired up by people who are rite on top of you because there is not enough room to get your own area, and migrate throughout the bay with a friend whom you are enjoying a well spent day with in just a beautiful defining spot in Hawaii. There is plenty of room for you to enjoy clear waters with a nice line of sight between you and your tropical paradise under the water. Truely a great place to snorkal. They have all the snorkaling gear you need to enjoy a good time, including underwater cameras you can rent, and you get to keep the film to develop photo's of you and your company with your snorkaling gear under the water with exotic fish swimming as if you were there friend too. I think your getting the point. I liked everything, and disliked nothing. Honestly, I'd meet ya on the street and if you asked me what you should do when you came to Hawaii, I'd say, "GO TO HANAUMA BAY"! You would probably thank me if you ever saw me again. ENJOY!!!!

Great Snorkeling... so pretty!
By ,
If you dont have a rental car you will ahve to take a tour. The fee's to get in are about $6 and it costs $9 to rent snorkeling gear. The area is beautiful... showers, bathrooms and a snack bar. You swim with the fish and view the beautiful coral reef. Nice Beach!

Awesome & abundant marine life. Many varieties of beautiful fish, eel, & turtles. I will visit here every time I am in Oahu. Great value for $5 per person. Don't forget to bring your underwater camera.

A Must See in Oahu!
If you are here in Hawaii for a vacation, you should definitely go check this place out. It is the best sea life preserve park. The fishes are great to look, although it's always crowded... The best time is go to during winter. However, it's worth the trip no matter what season. There are plenty of tropical fishes out there to be discovered. So grab your snorkel gear and explore the wonder of the ocean life.

Hanauma Bay The Best
By ,
This is the greatest & safest place to see many varieties of Hawaiian fish in their natural habitat. We had a ball. Suggestion: Where a T-shirt, the view underwater is so unbelieveable you will be floating a long time. So long we all had burns on our backs; even with sunscreen. It was fabulous!!!
