Hanauma Bay Marine Preserve

Description

Famed for its beautiful horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and clear, calm, turquoise waters, this natural marine sanctuary is home to thousands of colorful tropical fish. The waist-deep water inside the reef is perfect for novice snorkelers to explore. More experienced snorkelers might want to check with the lifeguard before venturing beyond to deeper waters to see sea turtles and other marine life. The Bay is least crowded in the early morning or late afternoon.

Great time!
By ,
This was my first trip to Hawaii, and my first time snorkeling. I loved both. The beach was absolutely beautiful. The water was absolutely beautiful. Being up close and personal with such colorful fish was an experience I will cherish forever...or at least until I return and do it again.

Best snorkeling is Honolua Bay in Maui!
By ,
I live in next valley from Hanauma. You haven't seen anything till you go to Honolua Harbor in Maui. There are 10 times the fish in the same area. It is a private bay open to the public so you don't hear much about it. Mau no ka oi! (Maui is number One!)

Loved it BUT
By ,
Yes it's a great snorkel and explore but dang I got caught in a out tide and got sucked out real far and had to fight hard to make it back in. It was scary and I can swim great. A local came to me after my trials and said dude you could have swam left 75 yards and caught the in current. Who Knew???

it was beauti and beyond... at the bottom of high cliff mountains looking at the horseshoe shape beach. follow the road beyond the bay and talk about breath taking views!!! uncapturable on film, it's got to be seen with your own eyes. someday i will go back!

Awesome!

My son and I snorkled there-arrived early and was not disappointed. The fish were beautiful and we had a huge sea turtle swimming with us. We would definitely do it again

Amazing
By ,
My cousin and I stayed down town and a local guy told us to take the bus local 22 to Hanauama Bay.. It only cost us two dollars usd for the bus and $7.50 usd to enter the park. It was great we wished we had spend more time... Amazing and unforgetable. :) Mahalo

Heaven on Earth

This picture does NOT do this beautiful place justice. Hanauma Bay is one of the most beautiful places. When you first see it from up above it is breathtaking.

wish we had spent more time here
By ,
we bought a fish chart when we arrived and then saw most of them while snorkling. you should rent a life jacket. this makes snorkling much easier because you dont have to worry about holding your self up. several times we found ourselves out deeper than we intended. the water wasn't very clear but you could see plenty. we took an underwater camera with us and have several good pictures. snorkling equipment rental right on the beach was very handy and the bus to take you back up the hill was a lifesaver.
