All that is left of the vast Dole plantation is a pictorial display of the pineapple's history and a country store offers fresh pineappels and gifts. In the back, nearly two acres of rich, red earth have been turned into the world's largest maze (recognized by the Guinness Book of Records) with a path 1.7 miles long. It is built from 11,400 tropical plants, including hibiscus and fragrant plumeria; in the center is a garden in the form of a golden pineapple. Maze admission is USD5 for adults and USD3 for children ages 4-12.
We did the Pineapple Express, which is the train ride through the pineapple fields. It really isn't that fantastic, you can see pretty much the same looking field by just driving to the north shore but I guess if you listen to the narration you do learn a bit about the process. You also see various plants/crops.
The best part (which is free) I think is the gift shop. If you just stop by to check that out you are good. They have all kinds of neat things and of course most of it is pineapple related. I haven't eaten at the cafe but I heard the pineapple whips are the bomb. For free you can also look in the little garden of a variety of pineapples and get some pictures of the pineapples growing.
My friends and their families loved the Dole Plantation. The Pinapple Garden Maze was great. To have even more fun, don't use the map. The train ride was interesting, but could be a bit boring for teen-agers. Gift shop prices were normal for a tourist attraction. Prices for each activity were very reasonable.
The Dole Plantation is a place I highly recommend visiting when travelling to Oahu. The atmosphere was great, and the plantation was set up beautifully and kpet up very well. The prices in the gift shop were a little high, but the merchandise was well worth the money spent. Overall, a great place to visit!
Nestled between two mountain ranges—the Waianae and Ko'olau—this 27 acre garden is considered the "tropical jewel" of Honolulu's botanical gardens.
