Sam Choy's Diamond Head Restaurant
Chef Sam Choy does not skimp on the portions of dishes such as, Mahi-Mahi and Oriental Lamb Chops, which are all served with two scoops of mashed potatoes or rice and a tropical salad. Sam's signature dish is Fish Laulau. For something really special, try the Fresh Island Fish Trio. Sam's favorite saying is, 'Never trust a skinny chef.' He himself weighs in at around 400 pounds. This establishment might well be the quintessential Hawaiian dining destination.
There was only one complaint, it was that we did not get to meet the smiling chef. We had a sunday buffet there and enjoyed it so much that later in the week we celebrated oue 42nd anniversary there. Our waiter was so sweet and the pastry chef made us a darling desert with happy anniversary written around the plate in chocolate. The next trip there we will plan around the filming of Sams TV show in hopes of meeting him. Sam serves the best vegatable soup I have ever had, I can close my eyes and taste it.yummmy...Thanks for the great memories of good food..Mahalo
Maxine and Cliff Chavis,
Several years ago we had the best oysters of our life at Sam Choy's Diamond Head. We went back last Friday because of the Oysterfest, in fact we looked forward to the meal all day. We were a little concerned when it took over 10 minutes for anyone to even come to our table. We then learned that dispite the newspaper advertisement, they only had two types of oysters, not that advertised four. We can cope, we ordered the sampler and two martinis. My martini came tasting odd, like the shot glass had some strong tasting something before my martini was made. The martini was sent back, but not received very graciously. The oysters came on a bed of salt and while they were tasty enough, they were not particularly cold. YUCK!! The rest of the meal followed with similar lack luster results. Considering the warm oysters, the cold service and the small strange martini, we felt like we had been had. I would have complained, but we could not find anyone who even resembled a manager. Total bill $123.00--I used to love going to Sam Choy's restaurants, but I think he needs to pay more attention to the day to day operations of the restaurants that made him famous.
I liked everything. We had several different appetizers, poke, great shiraz wine choice, steak etc. Based on the sampling of much of what was on the menu, I can safely say most of the menu items were outstanding. The only issue would be if you don't like fresh Tuna or ish.
