Benihana of Tokyo
This quality restaurant chain started the Teppan grill craze in America. The fresh Japanese cuisine remains top-notch. The menu has stayed virtually the same over the years, offering steak, chicken, shrimp and lobster. The chef's performances continue to amaze diners seated around the grill. Waikiki's location has a great cocktail lounge with a sushi bar. There are other high-quality Japanese steakhouses in Waikiki and Honolulu, but many consider this as one of the best.
We had a cook named Tai. We couldn't understand what he was saying as he is soft-spoken and doesn't have that good English. His tricks were alright, but not the best. I think the sanitary conditions were NOT good! He cooked chicken for a while and then he started to break an egg for the fried rice. While he was cooking the chicken and fried rice at the same time, he was using the same spatula, which is unsanitary. Also, he had a hard time breaking the egg all the way during his show. He tried to put two servings of salmon under a small cover. That was unsuccessful because the cover was too small to cover both salmons. The salmon was very burnt and also broke too because he didn't have enough space under the cover. When he was making the steak, he was cooking the chicken at the same time, which is not sanitary due to the blood of the steak and chicken cooking at the same time near each other. He was not entertaining. I was more entertained by the cook behind him! He did not offer from his side to give us a new salmon. We had to ask him to do that and he gave an excuse before cooking us a new one. Overall, we were not impressed and are not coming back here again!!! The parking situation was bad too.
The first thing I noticed as I came in, was the photos of celebrities who visited here. It was really crowded, but we were fine with it. Being asian, I understand the kind of crowd in restaurants. The service was awesome, the nice waitress had a nice convo with us and stuff. My uncle asked who looked younger or older on comparison to my dad. xD She said my dad looked younger, but my dad is 10 years older than my uncle. xD Hahaha, it was funny though. She said it because my uncle had alot of white hair than my dad. So, she said we got the head chef, chef Tom. It seemed to be he was the most friendliest chef there. He had wonderful conversation with us. And told us to call him Bruce Lee. Hahhaa, he was extremely talented. The way he could peel those shrimp rapidly fast amused me. He amused us with the lobster tail "Worm" dance move, and a bunny disco shrimp tail. He balanced eggs back and forth, and cracked it right on his spatula. He had jokes to tell, and was very bright and friendly. Being 12 years old, I find this place very kid-friendly. My little cousin who is 8 enjoyed it as well. They don't have to have a kids menu just to be kid friendly. They could maybe try some regular dishes, or have it shared with a parent or something. The filet mignon, the steak, was exquisite. The steak was very juicy and chewable. It was really the squishy meat. The most I've ever tasted. It was really good. I had some "ADULT" drinks, but asked for no alchohol. They had no problem with that. We all had a wonderful time there. I would recommend chef Tom if you visit there. =) Overall, the food should have more flavor. Other than that, it was nice.
When I read the first review of the woman with the kids I was thinking she is too picky and it can't be that bad. Well Actually it was pretty close to what she described. The one in Oahu is very different from the one in San Diego. In San Diego there is a kids menu and you can buy your drink in a buddha cup and take the cup home as a souveneir. We went to the oahu location last night and there was no kids menu so I had to order two main dishes for them at 20 dollars each. There are NO FREE REFILLS so we were charged for 2 pepsi's and 4 lemonades for three people. The drinks do come in a wine glasses so the soda goes fast. All in all we spent 184.00 for 4 people and if you choose the fried rice it is an additonal 3.00 per person which makes it 12.00 for rice. That is some expensive rice. The show was no worth almost 200.00 so all in all I think we will have to try KOBE stake house . I think they do the same type of thing. I'll let you know!
This resturant is not kid friendly. I couldn't fit the stroller between the seated customers which they sat us in the back. I have an infant and 2 kids under age 12. They didn't offer any coloring books or cryons and they don't have a kids menu as advertised on the web site. So parents please beware kids are not welcome in this resturant. Please note the fruity drinks offered inside the menu my kids wanted to order. We had to go through the big talk about alcoholic beverages and why they couldn't order them. We didn't know how much grease would come off the griddle where our 2 kids sat and complained they were plattered on.
Also it was sooooo hot from the griddle that I came out sweating. The shrimp was dry, we never received the green tea advertised on the menu that came with our dinner. The waitress didn't take my husband's drink order. Not to mention my clothing smelled like I was a cook in a resturant all evening after leaving - it over powered my perfume.
We had a reservation at 7pm and we were not seated till 7:30pm. What's the point in a reservation?
We have no desire to return to any location of this resturant. It's not all it's cracked up to be. Please pass on this one.
When my family of 7 arrived we had to wait about 45 minutes so we were just irritated by the time we sat down only because we had reservations at 7:00 pm but could not be sat at that time. My daughter noticed one paticular chef that was just a joker having fun with everyone. At one point we saw his table, the table on the side of him and across from him all standing and watching him do these crazy tricks with the rice bowl and a silver metal bowl. I kindly asked the front hostess if we could request him and they said he has two requests before us. I asked how long it would be for us to wait for him they quoted us about an 1 1/2. We left and came back at that time and it was well worth the wait I think they should charge a lot more just for the entertainment.. The chef we had was just too good to be true. You just have to expierence it for yourself "PERFECT" food and entertaining.... Chef Daniel is the absolute BEST EVER!!!!!! yeah man ha ha ha ha
Food was good. Service was fine. Ordered iced tea to drink. Came out in a small glass. Thought it was rather small glass of iced tea. Ended up needing 5 refills of iced tea to get me through the meal. I was never informed that each iced tea refill was an additional $2.50. My iced tea cost more than my meal! And to think that I didn't order a beer so I could save money!!
Everyone from the host staff, to the servers and chef were fantastic. It was extremely busy when we arrived, but we were seated promptly and so the show began. We had a great chef....I'd eaten at Benihana before so I was eager for the food, not so much the entertainment. I was happily wrong! The show truly became part of the meal and my girlfriend and I had a blast. I would definitely recommend this Benihana to travelers planning to visit Hawaii.
We thought the food was very good. Overall quite an enjoyable experience. I was hoping for a bit more entertainment from the chef as I had heard that, that is what makes it a unique and different experience.
The downside of the night was our waitress, she was extremely rude and spoke to us like we were stupid. She was very unhelpful and abrupt and it made us think twice about paying the service charge or leaving a tip.
