If you like superb Teppan-style Japanese food prepared with verve and dramatic flair, then you'll be right at home here. This place won Honolulu Magazine's Hale 'Aina award for "Best Japanese Restaurant in Hawai'i" three years in a row, and it's no wonder. The knife-wielding chefs are masters of the Teppan-yaki art and terrific entertainers to boot. The cuisine is prepared with only the finest and freshest ingredients. There are two other Tanaka of Tokyo locations in Waikiki.
We went to Tanaka of Tokyo and we were appalled when our chef mistakenly put the steak from the grill on the wrong person's plate, then went on to retrieve it from the plate (dirty plate mind you since that person had eaten the vegetables from it)and place it on the correct person's plate. He did not even offer to redo the steak. Something to cringe about.
I have went to Tanaka of Tokyo 2 times so far and Loved it! The service is good and the atmosphere is great. Yes a bit pricey but thats why you don't go to this kind of place without a coupon or somethig similar. Our Chef was entertaining which they should be. Yes for the price you should be given more food, but come on everyone should know by now a lot of pricey restaurants these days don't give as much as you expect. Especially Japanese restaurants. So enjoy yourself and have a drink with your meal. I would totally go back.
my wife and i went to this restaurant on our honeymoon in 1979. we took our kids back there in 2006 and we ended eating here 3 out of the 5 days we were on the island. great food, fun place, funny cooks, great time. we still talk about it today! we can't wait to go back. highly recommend it.
We were very unhappy with the service. The food was o.k. but very skimpy on the portions. The chef was abrupt and he didn't even give us a show. He came, prepared the food, and then left. We left disappointed and hungry. I would definatly pass this one up!
My boyfriend and i went to eat at Tanaka of tokyo for our anniversary. I have been there once before, but it was going to be my boyfriends first time. When he asked me where i wanted to eat i immediately said "can we eat at Tanaka of Tokyo?" I told he that i had eaten there once before and i loved the food that was served there, it was entertaining to watch the cheif cook right in front of you, and i liked the atmosphere. After we left the restuarnt, my boyfriend told me that Tanaka of Tokyo was now his favorite restuarnt :

I must say we have been to just about all the teppan yaki restaurants in Californina and in Hawaii. We went to Musashi and had a fun chef "Kevin". Went to Suntory and had a happy chef "Jason". We went to Tanaka Of Tokyo and Had a wonderful chef "Nick" And last we went to BENIHANA OF TOKYO and had the most unique time of our lives with a PERFECT CHEF """""DANIEL""""" oh my gosh you wanna talk about rice bowls flying behind the back and HEAD c'mon how did you do that fork and spatula gliding in the air and to top it all off he is just funny throughout our whole dinner. We had our share of chefs that don't talk but """"DANIEL"""" will make you laugh and you have to leave your table in a good way to calm yourself down. If you stay there you wont be able to breathe.. I can really tell he loves his job we were sat with Japanese people and he was talking to them and they were laughing and we don't know what he was saying but we can feel the love by his expressions and by his actions toward them. He looks as if he is serious and in a funny way rude in a just hilarious way but totally joking and he is not just one sided he talks with them so that we understand and with us so that they understand and us and them don't understand eachother but just his way of doing things eveyone will understand even if you can't see you will have a blast. He has the ability to go back and forth in english and Japanese if your lucky he may even throw in his spanish. He does a really good accent of it for not being hispanic. But seriously if you have never been to a Teppan Yaki restaurant try as many as you like and if you ever get the chance to go to Hawaii, BENIHANA OF TOKYO is a must. Request for "Daniel" We have eaten there before and had just about all the chefs but this was the first time with Daniel other chefs are ok but with Daniel you will never expierence Teppan Yaki like that anywhere else.. Oh yah and he has such a beautiful daughter and wife. They are very lucky to have a DAD and Husband with a grrrrrreat personality and talent like that!!!!!!!!! GREAT JOB DANIEL SAN
Service was good until we actually sat down. Our waiter talked extremely fast and was hard to understand. Not a bid deal except we struggled to get our order to him correctly. Ended up he didn't bring our shrimp appetizer. I ordered the 'super size' rib-eye, which was a tiny piece of meat once the fat was cut off. Food was served completely out of order, and our meat and fried-rice was SMOTHERED in garlic...which I like, but this was too much. Our miso soup was served right before the dessert which was odd. Vegetables were served long before the meat, and the fried-rice came long after the meat.
The cook was semi-interesting and not really into quality vs. getting through cooking for another table.
For $100 I expected more. Worst Benihana's style meal I've had by far.
