Tybee Island Lighthouse
This site is one of the most complete light stations in the U.S., retaining not only the lighthouse, but also all of its support buildings. The 154-foot tall lighthouse is the oldest and tallest active lighthouse in Georgia. Visitors may climb a spiral staircase to the top for an impressive view. Track your progress and catch your breath at several landings along the strenuous staircase route. Look down and you will see Fort Screven, which houses the Tybee Island Museum.
Great exercise!! Wow can't believe I made it to the top. People were wonderful. Great for kids lots of educational, history stuff. if you are scared of heights not your place ..but it is worth the view if you can go out on the cat walk ...
Liked the entire visit. Beautiful Reviews from the top of the lighthouse, great little gift shop with unique souvenirs. Beautiful views of the Atlantic! Check before visiting, only open on certain days and hours.
This is a must see. Take the 178 step hike to the top and see the island from there. Wow! If you are allergic to wasps, ask how the activity is at in the lighthouse. They tend to be up there. We only saw one.
Photo opps are great.
I love Tybee Island because of the people there. Everyone is so friendly and willing to make your stay pleasant. They will even put you up if need be. The Tybee Lighthouse gives you a beautiful view of the island. On a clear day you can even see Hilton Head, South Carolina. Now for the bad part of the Lighthouse. You must be in pretty good shape to climb to the top. Take it slowly. Also if you don't like heights then you can always stay on the ground and visit their Lighthouse store and do some shopping.
I would have loved to see sunset or sunrise from the top! It took me awhile to get up the steps but it was worth it. The battery museum across the street was interesting as well. Our guide for the lighthouse was very informative and told about ships that come into the Savannah harbor and even pointed out the general direction of the homes of a couple of stars who enjoy Tybee Island. It was a great scout experience.
Great excerise.Great sunset view.A must see for lighthouse lovers.Worth the drive and stay.So much history to be discovered. The lighthouse and the whole island are a hidden charm. The locals are so nice.Plenty of places to eat and dring near by.Check it out mates
Well, I think that going to a lighthouse in Georgia was quite the experinice for me because i have always like seeing pictures of lighthouses in postcards and i got to see one with about 80 Girl scouts and they seemed to like it too. Once you got in and climbed all of the many stairs it was like you were in a movie about the sea that involved a lighthouse and there was a beautiful family going on a trip to see a light house in a different state that they had always wanted to visit. I loved being able to see the view once i got to the top of the lighthouse and believe me it was amazing. I would definetly reccomed it to others and bring a camera but don't take it in with you take the picture outside of the lighthouse and really capture the secenery.
While we didn't actually go into the lighthouse, we went to Tybee Beach directly in front of the lighthouse this Memorial Weekend and witnessed one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. Our kids played nearby in the warm surf and the other couples/families left, we arrived late on Sat. while the CROWD was heading back over the bridge to Savannah. It's one of the cleanest beaches I've ever visited and a
all we paid was $2.00 in quarters to park. We're definately going back to visit the lighthouse and museum, and of course the beach.
The Lighthouse is worth driving to. On a sunny day you can have the most perfect view over Tybee Island with its wonderful beaches.
The 178 steps is no problem even children can do it. There are little resting areas on the way up so you can get your breath back.
Located in Fort Screven, these original museum rooms housed gunpowder and 700 pound projectiles used in the huge cannon that
once sat on top of the building to protect the entrance to the Savannah River. Exhibits cover topics of ...
