First African Baptist Church, Savannah

Amazing tour. They really show you the pride they have of the church and you really see the things that some tof he people who built it during the slave time. Cheep too!

Great tour! Only 5 dollars for an exsperence that I will never forget. It shows you what faith some people can have and how hard people have worked. Very interesting and a lot of history. Are tour guide was young and great. When you go to savannah even if your not there for very long, make sure you go to this church! It might not be the first thing you will wan't to see, but it was my faverite part of beautiful, historical Savannah.

We visited this church as part of a Freedom Trail tour (conducted by Johnnie Brown). The guide at the church shared a lot of information, he was very good, encouraged some audience participation, and also had a good sense of humor. We weren't able to spend much time downstairs because there had been a funeral there earlier and the relatives were having a dinner downstairs. We did get to go through the museum area, though and to see the design in the floor (air holes for slaves in the past). We also got to go upstairs to see the writing on the pews there and the organ, which was very impressive. A lot of history here.

This was one of the most profound moments in my life, so much so that my fiancee and I have decided to bring our family and friends there to observe our union as husband and wife. We were visiting Savannah from Chicago, we stayed at what is now one of our favorite hotels ... "The Mansion." While there we asked the concierge about thing to do, Torencia suggested amongst other things, the black history tour by Johnny Brown. On the tour we visited the First African Baptist Church. I don't want overexpose the experience because to me it was such a sacred and spiritual experience. If you want to establish a closer link with African American ancestry you will there. I could feel there experiences and strength. I always knew that my ancestors were spiritual and intelligent, but seeing the product of there resilience made it so surreal. I connected in a way that can't be broken. It was an amazing rewarding experience that I suggest you undergo, whether to connect your soul or to purge it. experience that i suggest you undergo, whether to connect your soul or to purge it.

I really enjoyed learning the history of the church. The code in the ceiling tiles, the hebrew writing on the side of the pew chairs on the second floor - perhaps one of the missing Israelites tribes???? The young man conducting the tours was enthusiastic and charming. Very enjoyable. I highly recommend this as a "must see." Marion - Queens, NY
