Beach Bum Weekend
An annual event that is much anticipated by the locals on Tybee Island, Beach Bum Weekend might surprise the unsuspecting visitor. Like most parades, there are floats pulled behind cars and trucks. Unlike most parades, however, the floats, often trailers or boats, are filled with water-throwing paraphernalia. Spectators, lined up along the parade route on Butler Avenue, are armed with buckets, squirt guns and hoses. What results is an all-out water war for fun loving beach bums of all ages. Opens daily at 6:30pm.
We winter in the area, and we've found that Tybee is a town of 1500 unusual people, all of which are quiet and unassuming during the winter months... Comes warm weather, comes half of Savannah and lots of tourists. Sure, they bring in the coins, but some of the folks who live in Tybee just want to be left alone to enjoy their retirement. Events like the Beach Bum Parade can get old for locals after a few years, they say. Remember, Tybee goes from 1500 quiet residents to 100,000+ visitors for most of their events. Yeah, Tybee wants you to spend your money, but most of the locals want to have some fun at their own events, too. Come early for (pay) parking (everywhere!). Be nice. Have fun. Enjoy the events. Drive safe going home. Come back next year. We'll be there.
I went to Tybee for the Beach Bum parade about 5 years ago and had a BLAST! Five of my friends and I are on our way this Thursday to soak some folk! I am sorry Mrs. Murray doesn't like that we are out-of-town participants but Boo on her! I will not let Mrs. Debbie Downer Murray rain on my parade. I plan to have some good clean safe fun. I love Tybee and visit every year. If the tourist stopped coming to Tybee where would that leave their economy? Something to think about.
TYBEE OR BUST!
I have done this trip twice with friends and we had a blast both times. I went in 2008 and 2009. So Ms. Murray it's only for locals? Well I hate to rain on your parade but you are wrong. All of our friends are in their late 20's and we have an awesome time. Who do you think you are Ms. Murray? Your last stand? You act as if tourists are invading. The area around where the parade takes place are mostly tourists. I will say there were more out of towners in 2008 but as we all know the economy collasped in 2009. It was hard for me to book a room this year but guess what Ms. Murray we got one and there will be 6 out of towners ready to "destroy" your last stand. Maybe you can stand outside with a sign on your back stating your name so we can own you with water. You know what the best is? Ocean water that is and we have a few buckets with your name on it. I don't think I've ever posted on a message board before but I couldn't resist when I saw Ms. Murray's unreal post. You must make your man or the men real proud. Have a great one and can't wait to make friends with all the out of towners.
just posted to the boards on tybee disscussion about what charissa murray said, and guess the locals will be a bit upset at how alot of people on willnow not visit the island, and with gas prices and such going up, tybee will wish the had us tourists ..
so your bad miss charissa murray you fubed this up and word gets around, you do not want us there will will go elsewhere,, and I am makeing sure I direct people to this post that are on our tybee boards on live journal and yahoo , twiiter so, tybee will loose alot of people as tourist this year have a nice one
The parade is good clean fun. If you don't want to get wet that day, don't go to Tybee. People get hurt at all events. It's going to happen and that's the chance you take by attending an event. We don't live in a perfect world and we shouldn't expect it to be perfect. My family has been attending for years - It's great bonding time :)
To the writer who said it should be held on Saturday, This parade is for the locals NOT TOURIST!!!!!! Beach Bum is for us as our last stand before the impending tourist season, its on a Friday so hopefully out of towner's will not be able to attend. This is also the reason there is no website and it is hard to get information. Also the organizers do not want it advertised.
The media picked it up this year and there were so many people that did not understand what it was about, it made it not fun anymore. I have been attending for 18yrs and I think this was my last year. Especially after watching a child get run over by a drunk teenager.
I love Tybee and it have been my home for close to 20 yrs. We can not survive without the tourist but at the same time people that come should respect our way of life.
Tybee's Beach Bum Parade is good clean fun but there are some who try to spoil it.
No water balloons are allowed or pressure washers or wetting the cops.
If the cops had seen the water balloons - these balloon-throwers would have been in big trouble.
It was our 2nd year at the Beach Bum Parade. The first year, we had a blast. This past year we were enjoying it until we went back to the room to change clothes to go out to eat. We were in our Jeep at a stop sign when some standing out side Ocean Plaza Resort open our car door and soaked the inside! Needless to say, I was very angry. My husband was ready to put the Jeep in park and jump out after him but I told him just to go on that there was nothing we could to about it. Then on our way to the restaurant, we past an elderly couple walking down the road the woman was carrying an oxygen tank and she was soaked! They were obvioulsy trying to hurry and get back to their room. The poor woman was cold and shivering. It is fun to have a water fight and wet the OUTSIDE of cars and people that are participating, but there is no need to get that crazy with the water!!
ive been 3 years in a row and every year i is more fun than the last. bring as much water as you can or find someone nice enough (which shouldnt be hard at tybee) to let you borrow their hose (theyre probably renting anyways). head down to the beach afterwards and relax. see you next year
