Located in the basement of the city's oldest hotel, this cozy restaurant is home to one of the best dining experiences in Savannah. The dining room is done up to almost resemble a trading vessel of yore, and the charming bar in the rear is the stuff of crusty sea captains. Known for delectable soups, bisques and seafood, the menu also features a variety of low country favorites for the landlubber. If you tip well, you may catch a glimpse of the suicide ghost that is said to inhabit the restaurant.
I imagine I've been to over 1,000 restaraunts in my life. This rates in the top of Lack of Service. First, the waitress was curt when I had a question about the menu.It took about 5 minutes to get waited on. When we didn't get our drink, I reminded the waitres 10 minutes later and her reply was only....Yes...no apology. One of us had the fish and chips and asked for some cocktail sause to go with it. Again, it took over 10 minutes to get it. Never once did she come over to ask if the food was ok. We went there to eat but also to check it out for some of our guests who will be attending our wedding to stay there...Well, No Way..
We went for the lunch buffet. It had southern foods, which being from Minnesota was one of the things we wanted to experience in the South. Dining room was to dark for an lunch meal though. Otherwise cozy and staff was thoughtful.
This visit was a surprise for my husbands birthday. The day before checking in I stopped by the Inn with some rose pettals and a few other romantic items asking if they could make the room look romantic for me...I also prepaid for a bottle of wine that the website claimed was complamentary. Upon entering the room instead of it being "dressed up" with the items I gave the manager, they were on the dresser in the same bag I dropped them off in! The dinner in the resteraunt that night was cold as well as the breakfast in the morning. I will never give them my money again.
The only good thing I can say is that the room was very comfortable. They have forgetful staff who do not care at all to please you (the owner, in particular). We stayed two nights because we had already paid for it and it was not refundable. Breakfast was late arriving the first day and did not arrive at all the 2nd day. We called and told them we hadn't gotten breakfast, they said they'd call the kitchen (which is directly beside them), never came, so we called them and said forget it - it was time to leave. We checked out and never even got an apology. They forgot to give us soap and towels. We had to wait an hour for them to be brought to us after we called for them. Both days we requested a wake up call - neither days did we get one. Just horrible. The room was beautiful, but I will NEVER go there again.
We were there for lunch when the prices are reasonable. Dinner prices are in the expensive range. The service and the food were great. I'm assuming they have music in the evening as we were seated by a grand piano. This detail would differently improve the ambiance. If we visit Savannah again, I would different want to eat here again.
