Gryphon Tea Room
A cross between a dressed up deli and a fancy Starbucks, this convenient bistro is operated by the Savannah College of Art and Design. Occupying the site of a longtime Savannah institution, Solomon's Drug Store, the meticulously updated property offers a dozen varieties of tea and as many of coffee, in addition to sandwiches, soups, salads and a delectable assortment of fresh-baked pastries. Prepare to wait a bit longer than normal if you come in the late afternoon, as traditional tea service is practiced between 4pm and 6pm. Cash only.
They had a large selection both on the menu and with the daily specials. I opted out for a Quiche made of shrimp and goat cheese, was excellent, my partner had the crab cakes and they were superb, not full of filling, you could actually taste the crab! The only problem I had was they had the seats packed together! The lady behind me kept bumping my chair everytime she moved.
We were seated faily quickly and the history of the place is awesome!
This restaurant used to be soooo charming. It was remodeled in 2006 and lost all of its charm and ambience. Even the employees were sorry that the quaint european feel of the former tea room was lost. It was always a must for our thrice early trips to Savannah. Now we just walk by and shake our heads.
I have lived in savannah almost my entire life. My step-mom used to take me to The Gryphon Tea Room as a treat and we always got a little dressed up to go and it was ALWAYS great.
Now that i'm older my friend and I go quite often and I have to say it's going downhill fast.
Our most recent trip to the tea room was the worst. We went in and told the (always grumpy, stressed out) host there were two of us and he said it would be a few minutes, so we sat down. Two minutes later two older ladies walked in and said there were three in their group and he sat them at a table for four. Next to these women was a table for four but with only two people seated there. My friend pointed it out to me and said she was going to talk to the host, because that wasn't fair. The host then said "Fine, i'll clean off a table for you." Okay, why wasn't someone doing that to begin with? Anyway, as he walked past me (I was still seated) he let out an "ARGHHH!!!" I'm completely serious. I was floored! He even flared out his hands! I couldn't believe he was being so unprofessional! Once we were seated we asked the waitress who he was and told her about him and she said "Yeah, he's always like that." Then we asked if there was a manager we could speak to and she said he WAS the manager!! She said she would let him know, but even that doesn't help. I won't ever feel welcome again if he's there!
Overall, the tea room has great food and the building is beautiful, but the service is lacking and not too inviting.
Also, the lemonade is fresh from a Minutemaid carton. We watched them pour it.
The Gryphon was perfect. Beautiful antique furniture that provided perfect ambiance for a regal historic building. We never missed a chance to drop by on our frequent Savannah trips. Were shocked to discover antiques gone/replaced by orange captains chairs - even old counters are missing. Many locals unhappy with the changes not to mention the staff, but they admit to being afraid of saying too much. Not worth the time to drop in. Starbucks has more atmosphere. MINUS 1 STAR.
The Afternoon Tea is an absolutely exquisite presentation of finger sandwhiches, scones, and sweets.
My experience was pleasurable as always. I would sertainly reccomend Gryphon Tea room to anyone local or visiting. I will return agian for my 5th visit to date!
I can't wait to return. The restaurant itself is a beautifully restored old Savannah drug store. Food was excellent and an amazing value -- you can get a great lunch for only $6!
Tip: We got there early to avoid the lunch crowds...
Just got back from a trip to Savannah. One of the highlights for us was the time we spent at the Gryphen Tea Room. Beautifully restored room--that alone is worth a visit. We had iced tea which tasted very good--the best we had on our trip to Savannah. The food was excellent as was the service. We enjoyed it so much we went back a second time, which is not something I ordinarily do while on a trip. We highly recommend it!
We randomly stopped in the Gryphon Tea Room after walking around Savannah all morning, and we were thrilled with the find.
The tea (of the day) was very refreshing and it could be sweetened to our liking (not the typical over-sweet Southern "Sweet Tea"). The food was excellent. I had the salad with fried goat cheese and the flavor combination (and quality) was something I'd expect to find on Top Chef... when we go back to Savannah - we expect to eat at this tea room again.
The location is excellent and the room is beautiful, but the servers are terrible. You are lucky if you get your order. The food really isn't very good either. I have tried this place on a couple of different occasions during the last 12 months but won't try it again unless the management and menu change. Truely terrible service with an additude and stale food. And forget about getting a cup of tea. The servers smoke breaks and chat sessions are not to be interrupted.
